Isobutylene Product Introduction
Isobutylene is a colorless, flammable olefinic compound with the chemical formula C₄H₈, containing one unsaturated carbon–carbon double bond. It is a by-product of petroleum refining and serves as a fundamental raw material in the chemical industry. Isobutylene is widely used in the production of polyisobutylene, butyl rubber, methyl methacrylate (MMA), and other chemical products.
Isobutylene Market Summary
According to the new market research report “Japan Isobutylene Market Report 2025-2031”, published by QYResearch, the Japan Isobutylene market size is projected to reach USD 0.5 billion by 2031, at a CAGR of 1.7% during the forecast period.

In terms of product type, currently MTBE Cracking is the largest segment, hold a share of 97.9%. MTBE cracking is a widely adopted industrial process for producing isobutylene. This method uses methyl tertiary butyl ether (MTBE) as the feedstock, which undergoes cracking at temperatures between 300–400°C in the presence of an acidic catalyst to generate isobutylene and methanol. The reaction is straightforward, and the products are easy to separate. Methanol, a valuable by-product, can be recovered for reuse or sold externally. This process is especially suitable for companies with existing MTBE facilities or abundant MTBE resources, offering advantages such as low equipment investment, easy operation, and moderate energy consumption. It is well-suited for large-scale continuous production.

In terms of product application, currently Methyl Methacrylate is the largest segment, hold a share of 51.5%. Methyl Methacrylate (MMA) represents the largest downstream application of isobutylene, accounting for the highest consumption share. MMA is widely used in the production of polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA), construction materials, automotive components, and high-performance coatings. With growing domestic demand in Japan for lightweight, transparent, and high-performance materials, MMA production capacity continues to expand, increasing the reliance on isobutylene as a key feedstock. Additionally, the rising demand for PMMA in optical electronics and precision molding
Isobutylene Market Dynamics
Market Drivers:
Expansion of synthetic rubber production: Isobutylene is a primary feedstock for butyl rubber (IIR) and halobutyl rubber, both essential in automotive tires, pharmaceutical closures, and other applications.
Rising demand from chemical intermediates: It serves as a precursor in the production of polyisobutylene, isooctane, and other value-added chemicals used in adhesives, lubricants, and plasticizers.
Restraint:
Volatility in crude oil prices: Since isobutylene is typically derived from petrochemical processes such as steam cracking or refinery streams, fluctuations in crude oil prices directly impact production costs.
Limited availability of bio-based alternatives: Although bio-isobutylene is under development, large-scale commercial availability is still limited, restricting sustainability options.
Opportunity:
Emerging bio-based production technologies: Advances in bio-isobutylene via fermentation (e.g., from glucose or biomass) provide new opportunities for sustainable production and reduce reliance on fossil feedstocks.
Growth in automotive and pharmaceutical industries: The increasing need for air-tight and chemical-resistant rubber materials (e.g., halobutyl rubber) in tires and medical stoppers supports long-term demand.
