Restaurants in Kaohsiung

As you know, there are many Japanese restaurants in Kaohsiung. Have you tried them before? How were they?

I am Japanese and I’d like to say a little about this subject. So many restaurants are called “Japanese style”, however, only the style is Japanese, the food has a Taiwanese taste. Most Japanese people think that the Japanese restaurants in Taiwan are different from the ones in Japan.

First of all, their taste is so sweet. Taiwanese like sweet tastes and they put sugar even in miso soup. Second of all, seasoning, for example soy sauce made in Taiwan is also different from soy sauce made in Japan. Japanese soy sauce is 100% brewed but Taiwanese soy sauce is mixed amino acid hydrolysis chemical soy sauce. It is difficult to eat genuine Japanese food but you can do it. I will introduce two restaurants that impressed me.

A restaurant named Benkei is located in Gland Hi-Lai Hotel. It is a little bit formal and expensive but you will be satisfied with it. You can eat anything that you are familiar with, from sashimi to tempura. If you like casual restaurants, I recommend Azabu Sabou (near Isetan Wufu 3 Rd ). You can eat not only Japanese sweets but also casual food.

The former British Consulate is located on a steep hill overlooking the sea and Kaohsiung Harbor. Now, the building and the outside area are used as a restaurant. We can see a nice view from the restaurant, especially when outside. Compared with the view, the food is not so good and it’s expensive. I think that the food is catered from the hotel. They heat the food that is already to serve. When we ordered, the food was served so quickly. I recommend you only order drinks.
