国内ではどちらかと言うと地味であまり目立たない「カムリ」ですが、海外では累計で1000万台を達成していたとは意外でした。特にアメリカでは絶大な人気があるようです。
まさにトヨタの世界戦略車ですね。

1980年誕生のFRモデル「セリカカムリ」に次いで、1982年にFFレイアウトを採用して海を渡り始めた「カムリ」は、いまではすっかりトヨタの世界戦略車として知られている。現在日本を含む世界8カ国で生産、100以上の国・地域で販売され、2005年9月には累計販売台数が1000万台を達成。特に年間40万台を販売しているアメリカでの人気は絶大で、過去8年間で7回もナンバーワンの座についた乗用車である。
2001年9月発売の先代を経て一新された最新型は、ダイナミックを謳うデザインと、ホイールベース延長のボディで広くなった車内空間、車両運動性能と安全・環境性能などをセリングポイントとした、「トヨタブランドの最上級FFセダン」としてリリースされた。
エンジンは2.4リッター直4のみで、FFには5段ATを、4WDには4段ATを組み合わせる。価格は247.8万円から336.0万円まで。月の目標販売台数は1000台、つまり年間で1万2000台。全世界では50万台を売りたいと息巻くグローバルカー、主戦場が彼の地であることは、誰が見ても明らかだ。
