MMI 173.Introduction to the Music Business and Entertainment Industries An introductory course presenting a structural overview of the music business and entertainment industries and the Music Industry Program. Historical development of music as a business and the development of the market place for both music and musicians. Emphasis is placed on contemporary music business practices. Topics include songwriting, publishing, musical instrument sales, artist management, arts management, professional organizations, copyright law, record industry, unions and guilds, and career development.
MMI 273.Artist Management and the Live Entertainment Industry Views of the live entertainment industry from the perspective of the performing artist, artist manager, talent agent, attorney and concert promoter. Consideration is given to the interpersonal, business and contractual relationships and their impact on the performing artist’s career. Strategies for career development are addressed and the ground rules of publicity, public relations, and promotion explored and applied in practical situations through special individual and team projects.
MMI 537.Record Industry Operations Organization, background, legal, and technical development of the modern record company. Basic copyright law pertaining to sound recordings, production and distribution of records and tape from the initial planning of an album through its purchase.
MMI 538.Music Industry Agreements A study of various music industry agreements and how they affect the artist and songwriter. Recording, music publishing and personal management agreements are analyzed and discussed. Topics include: negotiation considerations; deal points; and record company economics and profitability.
MMI 573.Music Copyright and Publishing A study of essential provisions of the 1976 Copyright Act and the protection of intellectual property, covering the principles and practices of modern music publishing and international co-publishing. Students examine the complexities of copyright law as it relates to the music industry. Various domestic and foreign publishing agreements and copyright registration forms, which are currently utilized in the music publishing industry, are also analyzed.
MMI 574.Record Industry Operations Organization, background, legal, and technical development of the modern domestic and multi-national record company. Departmental responsibility, interaction, and the role of the managers. Preproduction, production and postproduction responsibilities including repertoire selection, budgeting, recording, and packaging. Topics include company structure, artist and repertoire administration, release schedules, business affairs, and industry ethics. Basic copyright law pertaining to sound recordings, industry problems and, economics. Application of relevant computer software programs and information systems.
MMI 575.International Marketing and Promotion of Recorded Music An in-depth study of the structure of the recording industry, distribution patterns, merchandising methods, and promotion and marketing techniques that are unique to the industry. The role of the multinational entertainment conglomerate as it affects international sales is also examined. Topics include merchandising rights, domestic and international licensing of recorded music, trade publications, trade charts and information sources, campaign development, and the role of radio airplay. Students develop comprehensive marketing and promotion campaign plans and participate in class presentations.
MMI 578.Royalties in the Music Industry An indepth study of the royalty payment procedures used in the music industry. Prerequisite: Approval of instructor.

MB 405.Advanced Legal Issues and Contract Negotiation
Combines an examination of advanced legal topics relating to the music business with a workshop approach to the development of negotiating skills. Students will negotiate various agreements based on actual cases and work to settle disputes arising from the breaching and termination of agreements. Topics to be covered include record deals between artists and record companies, distribution deals between independent and major record companies, copublishing and administration deals, producers and production deals, touring and merchandising, trademark and copyright disputes, group break-ups, and disputes between artists and managers.
MB305.Music in the International Marketplace
Study of current issues affecting the international music marketplace with emphasis on understanding the international record business and international music publishing. Study of the major geographical areas where music is traded; discussion of music market activities in individual countries.
MB335.International Industry Operations: Music Publishing
A detailed analysis of the inner workings of music publishing companies, with emphasis on the role of the publisher in the acquisition, market development, and administration of copyrighted musical compositions. Topics include copyright registration and renewal, contractual relationships with composers, and an analysis of domestic and international licensing of the publisher’s catalog, through recordings, motion pictures, print, and performance rights. Relationships with foreign affiliates and subpublishers are also covered.
MB225.International Economics and Finance
An analysis of supply and demand in the international music marketplace, as affecting issues of pricing, employment, the output of goods and services, and competition. Emphasis is also placed on the techniques of financial management found within a music-oriented business, including planning and forecasting, allocation of resources, and profit analysis, as well as the monetary transmission mechanisms found in international business.
