まねき猫の発祥地は諸説あり、京都の檀王法輪寺の黒のまねき猫が日本最古とされています。

東京の豪徳寺の三毛猫も有名です。
三毛猫は古来より福を呼ぶ存在であったために、三毛猫のオスをモチーフに、多くのまねき猫が作られました。

まねき猫の色によって、御利益がことなります。

白のまねき猫は「来福招福」。
黒のまねき猫は「厄除け」。
赤のまねき猫は「無病息災」。

まねき猫は日本ばかりではなく、最近では東南アジアをはじめ、世界のあちこちで見られるようになりました。
