Completely unexpectedly I received a New Year card through the post from a friend I thought I had lost contact with. It really made my day. For some reason that one card was worth all the other cards I received put together. Because, you see, the card was from someone who didn't know our address, but had to make a special effort to find that address. They say that it is the thought that counts, not the gift or the card itself - that was certainly true in this case. All the not very nice things which have happened to me over the past few days disappeared in an instant. Bill came over and helped me with the ceiling repair which we had planned. The job went well, and was finsihed in around four hours. At least the part I needed help with was finished within that time, there is still quite a bit of work to do to completely finish it, but I can do that on my own. Unfotunately, Bill had some other obligations today so we had to forgo our usual very late breakfast at a cafe which is part of our reward for doing something like this.It is still very windy. I found this little video clip today. flying motorbike

Whenever I hear the term ‘Master Plan’ it makes me smile broadly. There are master plans for all kinds of things, from park redevelopment to company restructuring. And what do they mean? That a whole load of pen pushers allocate themselves jobs and perks for several years. And what do the rest of us get out of it? Usually absolutely nothing as the plans are usually shelved just before completion! We don’t even get to see what these highly paid officials have been doing with our money. And why are the plans shelved? Because they have taken so long to do anything that they are now out of date! And what is the response? Another Master Plan!!! Two more years of bunce for the same people! And so it goes on. And on. And on.Which is better, fifty tea bags for a pound, or a hundred tea bags for a pound?Pie and eight vegetables, with tomato ketchup.Sorry about yesterday’s diary, I did the same one twice. It’s the different dates, you know, it’s a day behind here when I post the entry. That’s my excuse anyway.“Beam me up, Scotty.”

It’s a long story, but Junko has decided to make some miso. She has the koji and we bought the beans and salt yesterday. The salt came in a plastic bag and so, once the bag was opened, the remainder needed to be stored somewhere, which reminded me about the salt pig we used to use. This is it. We haven’t used it for keeping salt in for ages, and in fact, Junko kept it by the sink to put the damp sponges in years ago (I think she thought that this is what it was really for!). But now, after a really good rinse and a spin in the dishwasher, it is back being used as it was intended to be. Quite why it is called a ‘pig’ I am not sure. Pig must mean something else, as there is also ‘pig iron’ which has nothing to do with pigs either. The weather has turned miserable again, not too cold, but wet and windy. It was supposed to be ‘spring showers’, but ended up being wall to wall rain most of yesterday. Oh well, at least it’s not horribly cold any more. The broad beans I sowed still haven’t shown their heads above ground. I fear that they have been either eaten or gone rotten. I saw one on the surface the other day, it must have been dug up by a bird or next door’s cat. I planted it again as it had something of a root on it, but am not hopeful that it will survive. The cabbage seeds have come up; at least that’s something good.

Bill and Pam had asked us for coffee this morning, but we couldn't go as we were waiting for somebody to come and look at one of our rooms with a view to staying here for a couple of months. No exact time had been arranged, but the visit was expected before lunch. Anyway, around eleven thirty we got a phone call. It was our prospective guest, she was at the station and was lost, so Junko walked to the station to meet her. Ten minutes later Junko was back in our house saying she couldn't find her, and I went in the car to look for her. I couldn't find her either, and when I got back home, Junko told me that she had rung again and said that the lady in question was at the wrong station, and had decided not to come to our house anyway. It was now half past twelve. Bill's mobile phone doesn't work in the place he was this morning, so I couldn't ring him and we decided to hop in the car and see him anyway, even though it was too late. It is only ten minutes away. Anyway we got there (in very heavy rain), but he wasn't there, and neither was Pam. On our way back from Bill's we dropped in at he local DIY store to get something I needed to finish a small repair I was doing in the bathroom, but unfortunately that particular item was out of stock. Most frustrating!I tried to contact Bill all afternoon, but failed, and then around seven thirty he rang and said that he and Pam would be at our house shortly. Something had happened and they had been badly delayed. So we had our morning coffee at around eight o'clock.

These are the cauliflower plants I bought yesterday. They are in the ground now, but this is what they looked like when I got them home. They should produce cauliflowers in July or August, or at least that is what the man who sold them to me said. Yesterday afternoon we saw evidence of a snail in the greenhouse, so we cleared a lot of trays, pots and other rubbish out of the greenhouse. We found the culprit, well, three or four small ones. Let’s hope there is no monster hiding in some dark and damp corner ready to sneak out and crop Junko’s baby lettuce or some similarly delicate seedlings. One snail can destroy weeks of work in a single evening, it can be terribly frustrating. But as this winter was colder than usual and the spring has been drier, there don’t seem to be quite so many of these destructive creatures about this year, thank goodness. It has rained most of the day.My ear is still no better.

Atsuko and Andy, the ones who live on the narrowboat, came round for lunch today. Very nice. Atsuko had to go out immediately after lunch to deal with their dog. It’s a thing like a ‘labradoodle’, but has webbed feet like an otter hound. So nobody seems quite sure what it is. A mixture of many! One thing is certain about it, it is getting bigger. Bigger and bigger by the day. It’s going to be pretty massive when it stops growing. We were having coffee when Atsuko came back from the ‘walk’. We were then subjected to a description of the various toilet activities the dog, whose name is Pook, had got up to on the walk. Very amusing but not really what one wants to talk about for long! I must say though that he is a nice dog. Nice owners, too.We have taken the beans down. Very sad. The garden looks bare.

Perhaps somebody who clicks here today will be the ten thousandth visitor. Amazing. We have got a small pond in in the garden at the front of our house. Bill gave Junko a water-lily a few years ago. It has grown quite well, and this year, for the first time, it has got some flowers on it. Not a display to rival the lilies in Monet's garden at Giverney, but it is fine for us.
