紅茶がイギリスを代表する飲み物であることは誰でも知っている。その飲み方についてアメリカの化学者が少量の食塩を加えることで苦味がなくなり味が良くなると発表して、イギリスで大きな問題になっている。アメリカの独立戦争に関連して、イギリスからの紅茶を船から海に捨てた有名な事件があるが、それ以来の米英論争だと報じている。イギリス人にとって紅茶はアイデンチティーを表すもので、よそ者に口を出してほしくないということのようだ。ロンドンにあるアメリカの大使館がこれはアメリカの政策とは無縁で、この件には干渉しないと表明したという。紅茶は中国にあったものをイギリス人が気候の適したインドで栽培して、後にイギリスで流行したものらしい。すでに中国で食塩を加えると苦味がなくなると伝わっており、これを米国の化学者が実験的に証明したのだという。この化学者によると食塩のナトリウムが苦味成分と反応するという。
イギリスでは食塩を入れても味は良くはならないとか、アメリカではぬるいお湯で淹れているからだと反論している。さらに別の国の人で紅茶はティーバックではだめで、茶の葉から淹れたのが本物だという意見も紹介されている。

It is a dispute between the US and UK since Tea Party Incident in which boxes of tea were dumped into sea. For British people black tea is a symbol of their identiy. They felt as if their pride was hurt. The US embassy in London said it was not the state policy and distanced itself from the dispute.
Black tea originally grown in China was transplanted to India where the climate was good for black tea. Later it became popular in the UK. The manuscript written in China in 8th century already mentioned the addition of a bit of salt improves the taste of black tea. The American scientist found that sodium ion in salt react with bitter component in black tea.
Many Britons countered this opinion by saying the addition of salt never improved the taste. There is a person in another country who says that black tea made from tea bag common in the UK is not authentic.
