Summer Break
セガレは夏休み開始と同時に高松の実家に一人旅を敢行。10日間の勉強合宿を終えて帰ってきました。初めての一人旅。10日間にわたって両親から離れて勉強や手伝いをする初めての経験。修行の成果あって、少ししっかりしてきたかな？？ 今回修行に行かせたのは、自分でもよい選択だったと思います。 As soon as the summer break began, my son traveled alone to Takamatsu, my hometown, where a study camp with grandpa and grandma was held for 10 days (both are retired teachers). Seems to me that he grew up to some extent as a result of his first experience to do things alone without parents (and he finished most of his summer homework). Windsurfing
ご無沙汰しておりました。6月の出来事から少々UPしていきます。Long time. I've got to go back to June to update the stories. 6月21日、Windsurfing初体験です。なかなか面白いのですが、継続するには少々お金がかかります。よって今回は体験のみ。Windsurfingの盛んな逗子。いつかまとめて挑戦してみたいところ。On June 21, I windsurfed for the first time. Pretty interesting sport, as it is the combination of saling and surfing. However, it is not inexpensive. So, this time was just for experience. Because Zushi is the place for windsurfing, rather than surfing, I would love to learn it seriously some time in the future.

Surfing SHONAN
天気もよろしく、波も穏やかだったので、久々にセガレとSurfing。久々にヨメもついて来たので（珍しい）、貴重なSurfing Picsが撮れました。With nice weather and very mild swells(?), I took my son to the beach for surfing. It's been long since last time he surfed. Because my wife came together, which is a very rare occasion, too, we can see the pictures of ourselves. 初めて写真を見てあまりかっこよくないことがわかった。This is me. I found it pretty uncomfortable to see myself surfing for the first time... Not cool as I ever believed...それなりにちゃんとは乗ってますが、板が長い。ノーズライド気味？The board is a longboard, just too long for him. But he enjoyed it a lot.Trying to noseride? はい落ちたWiped out. No problem.記念撮影。今日は、Longで二人乗りに成功しました！！（一回だけですが、まあまますごいこと。）Say cheeeese! We succeeded a tandem ride on the longboard, which is a so-so great thing.

Yonezawa
連休は、天地人でお馴染みの米沢にドライブしてきました。「愛」の前立てのほか、謙信公の甲冑と頭巾、前田慶次郎の甲冑も見てきましたよ。During holidays, we drove to Yonezawa, where it is famous for Naoe Kanetsugu. Saw the armours of Kanetsugu, Uesugi Kenshin and Maeda Keijiro上杉神社Uesugi Shrine上杉鷹山。JFKが尊敬する政治家として挙げたそうです。Uesugi Yozan JFK regarded Yozan as one of the most respected politicians in history.上杉伯爵邸 The house of Count Uesugi自販機もかねたん。Very funny vending machine. ついでに仙台まで脚を伸ばし、政宗公を訪問。最近の女子高生はマサムネ様のファンが多いようで。Went to Aoba-Jo, the ruin of Samurai Castle in Sendai, which Date Masamune built. Driving thru the bar for the first time
富士スカイラインまでETC初体験です。大黒PAでETCの機器無料配布やっていたので、午前3時から並んで午後3時まで待ち続けた成果を、ようやく試すとき。Drove to Fuji Skyline with my new ETC device. (ETC: Electronic Toll Collection system = Japanese EZ-Pass) They were providing the machines for free at Daikoku PA;I had to go to the shop at 3:00 a.m. in the morning and wait there for 12 hours until the machine has been set up... Hmm, my effort is going to be paid off at last! 初めてバーを抜けるときは、やや緊張（初めて通るとどこにバーがあるのかよくわからなかった。）。When I went thru the bar for the first time, I was kinda nervous, serching for where the bar was.成果：Discount I got from the drive today (discount as one of economic stimulus measures);朝比奈 → 六ッ川： 600円 → 300円町田 → 富士 ：2850円 → 1350円御殿場 → 秦野 ：1050円 → 550円合計 ：4500円 → 2200円（差額2300円）(Total saving = Yen 2300)スカイラインは、まだ冬季閉鎖中。道路の真ん中で寝転んで喜ぶ子ども。Fuji Skyline was still closed until the end of April.So my kid lied down on the road to enjoy the empty road. 帰りの温泉から富士山Night Fuji from a spa.

My garden - under construction
完成まで3ヶ月。苦心の作をご覧あれ。Look at the change! Took three full months. 手摺がつきました（もちろん業者作）。- Made a railing. (Not my work, of course)手摺は高かった。。。- Railing cost a lot! 芝を貼り、- Made blank area lawned.地面を掘ってレンガを並べ（背中が痛みます）- Dug the ground and lined up bricks. Got backache...ガゼボを設置。（コストコから搬送 → パーゴラを解体 → ガゼボ組み立て、大変だった。。。）- Set up a gazebo (brought from COSTCO -> dismantle the pergola -> assemble the gazebo, all by myselfe...). そして完成！（もはや崖とは呼ばず。）- Complete! Now I call it a garden (not a gully).

Pittsburgh Party
Pittsburghにちなんだ皆さんと、我が家でPartyです。年代もバックグラウンドもバラバラですが、いい仲間です。サッカーゲームは大人のPartyでも結構活躍します。Had a party with those related to Pittsburgh. They are all good people in various ages with different backgrounds. The soccer game was brought back from the States. Even adults got excited a lot!

Gully in my backard
我が家の庭は山の斜面に面していて下は谷。自然を楽しむにはいいのですが崩れると危ないので土留め工事を依頼。10日間の大工事になりました。年明けに手摺をつけます。Our backyard is facing a gully. Though we can enjoy nature directly from our backyard, it was not safe enough for kids. So I hired workmen for making a retaining wall to fix the collapsing slope of the gully. It took ten days to complete. Railing is to be added in Jan.

X'mas Party
ご近所さん宅でX'mas Partyやりました。私はアメリカで覚えたロースとビーフを持参。なかなか良くできました。Had a X'mas party with the neighbors. I brought a roast beef which I learned to cook in the States. Looks delicious, doesn't it?

Goood wave
いつも休みになると波がなくなるのですが、今日はとてもいい波。が、こういう日に限って家族サービスが入ってしまっていたり、、、くやしすぎるのでとりあえず海を撮影して帰ってきました。 Murphy's Law applies to surfers, too, of course. When we can not go to beach, there always are good waves, and there are only smaaall waves when we can go to beach. Today, the wave was superb (4-5 feet), and I had a promise to play with my son... Taking pictures is all I could do today.

Autumn Red in Shuzenji
紅葉狩りに修善寺に行ってきました。朝八時半出発、到着は午後四時過ぎ。。。Went to Shuzenji for watching autumn leaves. Left my house at 8:30 a.m. and got there about 4:00 p.m. .. 往路はどこからでも富士山がよく見える、最高の天気でした。With clear, beautiful sky, Mt. Fuji could be seen from anywhere on the way.材木座からだるま山からついた頃には既に夜。しかしライトアップされた紅葉もまたよろし。It was already dark when we get there, but the leaves in the light were magnificent, too. お茶屋さんで、茶揉み工程をお手伝いしました。手伝ったお茶はしっかり頂きましたが、できたばかりのお茶は確かにうまい。At a tea shop, my son helped the shop performing the tea massaging process. They gave him the newly processed tea leaves, and the tea made from it was really nice.

Halloween
お久しぶりです。一月ほど海外出張に出てましたので、久々のエントリーは10月ネタにさかのぼります。Long time! I'd been on a biz trip to the US for a month. Now I had to go back to October event for this entry. ご近所さんとのハロウィーンパーティ。セガレを除いて、子どもたちは皆初めての体験のはずながら、なかなか見事な仮装です。セガレは龍馬。着物は祖母に作ってもらいました。私はダースモール。We had a Halloween party with neighbors. It must be for the first time for kids to be in a costume (except for my son), but they did great job. My son became the greatest Samurai of Japanese history, Ryoma Sakamoto. His grandma made his costume. And I was Darth Maul.

Full Moon
ウッドデッキから、大人の科学マガジンについていたニュートンの反射望遠鏡で満月を観察。実際は満月の二日後でしたが。From our wooddeck, I took a picture of full moon through a mock of Newton's Reflecting Telescope. Actually, it was 2 days after full moon.

Riding on the last day of summer vacation
セガレの夏休み最後のライディングです。鎌倉にて。まだ自力でパドルはできないので少しだけ押してあげると、右でも左でも曲がっていきます。小さいのでショートボードをロングボードのように乗っちゃいます。My son caught waves in Kamakura on the last day of summer vacation. School starts tomorrow. As he does not have enough power to paddle himself, I have to puch the board a little bit. However, once he takes off, he can turn left and right. Because he's still short, he can ride a short board (which is hard to take off) like a long one (which is easier).

I am sailing
市民ヨット教室に参加しました。ロープの結び方、準備、動かし方、ディンギーなら何とかなりそうです。意外に身体は疲れました（バランスを取るのに知らない内に身体の筋肉を使っているようです。単なる運動不足かな。）I went to a saling school for beginners. Learned how to tie a knot, prepare a dinghy and operate it. As opposed to my expectation, it was physicaly hard (I used some muscle that I do not usually use to keep balance).

Berry & Cherry
季節が変わるといつも驚きがあります。今回はさくらんぼと草イチゴ。草イチゴはとても甘くて、近所の子どもたちと鳥のお気に入りになってます。There is always surprise as seasons go by. This time, we found cherries and berries in my garden woods. The berries are favorite of kids in the negiborhood and wild birds.

Hammock Stand
ハンモックスタンを2x4で作りました。ハンモックは以前カンクンで買ったもの。この時期、ハンモックは非常に快適です。I made a Hammock Stand of 2x4 lumbers. We bought the hammock in Cancun before. In this season of year, spring breeze is really nice for laying down in the hammock. 先月は桜が見ごろでしたが、今週は何と、藤が咲きほこっています。This week, we can see wild flowers of wisteria in full bloom! (it was cherry bloosome last month) We are making a small floor bed in the backyard, but nothing can compare to wild nature.

Garden Under Construction
庭はまだ作業中。やるところが残ってるのはいいことで、これからも身体動かなくなるまで家周りのことを楽しんでいこうかと思います。Garden is under construction. It is good that I still have rooms to play. Maybe I am going to enjoy making/improving whatever I like (and family want me to) around the house till I can not move.デッキの目の前に桜が咲きました。去年は5月入居で、目の前に咲くとは知りませんでした。これはお得！We found we can enjoy cherry blossom right in front of our wood deck, which we did not know since this is our first spring in this house. This is awesome!

Happy birthday
It was my son's ninth birthday. We didn't prepare much this time like we used to in the U.S., but he was happy as always. He got Wii for a present from parents, and he is looking forward to talk about it with his best friend in Pittsburgh. Played monopoly. I played a banker and calculated their properties and cash with my laptop. My son was in the third place.But a birthday boy always wins in the end... Birthday is always nice.

Went to Yugawara Hot Spring. It was the first small trip since we moved to the new house. Nothing special at the hot spring. On the way there, we visited Odawara Castle. My son's first visit to a traditional Japanese castle.

デッキ下倉庫 New shed under the deck
冬休み中にウッドデッキ下に倉庫を作るべく、大工さんを雇って作業開始。During the winter holidays, I worked with a carpenter (I hired) to build a shed under our wood deck.資材は大工さんと相談しながら自分で調達しました。レッドシダーと合板で骨組みを作り、防風・防水処理をして、杉板で外壁を作ります。I procured all the materials. We build the frame with 2x4 red cedar and plywood. Wrap with special paper which is water and wind-proof. Then nail ceder boards as outer wall. まず土台作り。Frame of the shed. 平行して外壁用の杉板に防腐剤を塗ります。これが我々のメインの仕事。While building the frame, we painted preservative called Xyladecor so that the shed can keep years. The main task of me and my son. 防風・防水用の紙を貼り、Wrap the frame with water/wind-proof paper.外壁を貼る。Nail the outer walls (Japanese cedar). そして完成。Finished.まだ少し作業は残りますが、大満足の出来です。Some work still remains, but almost finished (with my great satisfaction).

明けましておめでとうございます - A Happy New Year!
明けましておめでとうございます。A Happy New Year! まずはおめでたい富士から。隣山の富士と逗子湾が臨める絶景ポイントから。This entry starts with Mr. Fuji and Zushi shore. We can have the best view from the nearby hill. 最後の更新から時は流れ、日本の秋も終わり、Time flew indeed since I last updated, and beautiful autumn in Japan has already passed so long ago...その後の家の出来具合を紹介。I would like to update the progresses we made around the house;11-12月は、庭に取り掛かりました。春までにBBQコンロを煉瓦で作る予定？In Nov. and Dec. we began gardening with bricks and mortar. We plan to build a BBQ Grill with bricks (if I can). それから、ウッドデッキにようやくテーブルとベンチ完成。2x4 Basicsの組み立て式。And I finally made a table and bench (2x4 basics) which was pretty easy with 2x4 lunbers. 地下室も完成し、いろいろ進化しています。がんばってこれからも更新していきます。There are many other progresses; we finally finished with the basement for example (will show you the pictures some time). I know I am lazy, but I'll do my best to keep you updated!

Sailing
湘南では海のスポーツが盛んです。安いスクールもたくさんあり、今回、セガレはヨットに挑戦です。Marine sports are popular in Shonan area, and there are many community schools where you can learn one inexpensively (abt. $20!). This time my son took a yacht lesson. 陸上で練習の後、First, you have to learn on the ground how a yacht works. インストラクターに操作を教えてもらい、Then you can operate it in a swimming pool with an instructor by your side.最後には一人で操作。Finally, my son learned to sail by himself. ヨットは、近くの高校生が作ったそうです。Those yachts were built by students at a nearby high school.

Surfing SHONAN
湘南なのでSurfing debutです。海岸線を走る度にいつかやると決めてました。We live in Shonan area, famous for surfing junkies. Every time I drove the shoreline I thought we MUST do it. 最初はセガレと一緒にスクール参加です。二人とも二回目でTake offできましたよ。（Long boardは、立つのは簡単らしい）My son and I first went to a surfing school, and both of us could take off (stand up on the board) at the second trial. (Beginners usually start with long board, with which even beginners can take off.)余計なことはいいません。ようやく「こちら側」の世界に脚を踏み入れました。初めてバイクに跨ったときの気持ちを思い出しました。I don't know if I can describe the feeling well, but I remember the feeling I had when I first rode a motorcycle. (I was an avid motorcyclist.)So cool!

DIY Summer
お盆休みは一週間地下室の仕上げに取り組みます。大工さんを雇って床張り、ドアの取り付け等を依頼。我々はペンキ塗りと壁塗りを行います。I took one week off this summer and spent the whole week for finishing the un-finished basement, from flooring, attaching doors, to painting walls. I hired a carpenter for works that need skills. We did painting wood materials (with paint) and walls (with diatomite mix). 熱中症で倒れそう。We almost got sunstroke...右側がコンクリートのままの状態。左側が床板を張った状態。大工さんは急ピッチで作業を進めていきます。Right-hand side is just mortared floor. Left-hand side is the floor already covered with floorboard. Carpenter's work is not only skillful but quick as well. 最終日の壁塗りは朝の4時までかかりました。On the last day, painting took me until 4:00 in the morning. 出来上がりは次回エントリーでご紹介します。荷物の搬出・搬入を手伝ってくれた友人に心から感謝。I will show you the finished room in the next entry. Anyways, special thanks to my friends who helped me move in and out the furniture and stuff.

今日はセガレがウインドサーフィンスクールに参加。今日は会社を休んで見学。Son went to a windsurfing school. I took a day off and saw my son windsurf. いざ海へ。Let's go ride!快走してます。Smooth riding!風の理論も少々勉強して、海の上を快走。セガレも気に入った模様。次はサーフィンスクールにトライします`。In the class, he learned some theories of wind and sailing. And he rode back and forth with a help from a instructor. He seems to like it a lot. We will go to surfing (not windsurfing) school next time, and I'll report it, again. Look forward to it!

ウッドデッキほぼ完成。 Wooddeck almost done
28日の花火大会になんとか間に合いました。The deck is now almost ready (though not complete). We hoped it done by the day of fireworks.デッキでパーティだ！We can party on the deck!デッキから花火が見えます。From the deck, we can see the fireworks on the beach.

カブト虫 the beetles
去年、卵以前から育ててきたカブト虫が成虫になりはじめました。We've been raising beetles since last summer (from the parents of current generation). About this time of year, they will turn into adult beetles. 20匹程幼虫がいましたが引越しで10匹ほど小学校に寄贈。その後、少しずつ人にあげて今、5匹になりました（3匹牝、2匹雄）。We had about 20 larvas, of which about 10 were given to my son's former school. Some of the rest were given to friends, now we have five beetles. Three girls and two boys. さなぎ。Pupa.雄。He is a boy. 牝。She is a girl.After a while, the yellow-ish color became black. My son's best friend in the US got a beetle, too. This entry is to show him Japanese beetles transforming from pupa into an adult one. Enjoy!

Wood deck
5月末に引越し後、多忙を極め、その後スローライフに。すっかり更新しなくなってしまった。皆さんお久しぶりです。It's been long since we moved in in May. After things were settled, we've been enjoying the slow life near the beach. ようやく外溝工事が始まり、ウッドデッキの建設が始まった！Finally exterier has been undertaken. Now the large wood deck is being constructed!材料はウリン。アイアンウッドです。The chosen material is, of course, iron wood. Half of the floor is done. Looking down, you see woods.

引渡し Title transfer
予定通り5/19引渡しとなりました。引越しはまだですがいつでも住み始められる状態です。この日は寝袋とエアマットで一泊しました。Title transfer took place on May 19, and now I am an owner of the house. We stayed overnight with sleeping bags and air-mats.念願のビューバスにも入ってよいのです。We could not wait to use the bath. 裏庭（山）からは鳥のさえずりが聞こえます。鶯が飛び交い、朝は鶯の声で目が覚めました。The backyard mountain is full of wild birds. Songbirds awakened us in the next morning (there were many nitingales flying in the mountain). 横須賀基地まで約20分。近くのうみかぜ公園では釣り、BBQ、バスケット、スケボー、自転車（Off road)などが楽しめます。20 minutes' drive to Yokosuka base. Near the base was Umikaze park, where you can enjoy fishing, BBQ, basketball, skate board, offroad cycling, and so on. This is not so special in the states (and we can enjoy everything at Frick Park), but such places are pretty rare in Japan.

施主検査 Owner's inspection
今日は施主検査でした。来週引渡し、引越しは月末です。Today was the day of owner's inspection. Title transfer is scheduled on the next weekend. We are moving in by the end of month. It'll be exciting and super-busy weekends. リビング完成。Right inside of the entrance is living room.ここから二階。To the second floor.広めのバスルーム（ユーティリティ）。Wide bathroom. 施主検査の結果、それなりに修正が必要なところはありましたが、綺麗になった家を見るのは初めてで、思った以上の出来栄えでした。As a result of inspection, several modifications hsould be undertaken in a week. However, it was for the first time for us to see the house cleaned up, which was so great. その後、立石海岸に。After the inspection, went to Akiya Beach. セガレが、はぜを捕まえた。My son caught many goby fish.立石海岸の夕日。相州三浦秋屋の里のタイトルで広重も描いた。Sunset at Akiya Beach. 珪藻土で壁塗り diatomite walls
先日の連休は珪藻土で壁塗り。We are putting diatomite mud on the walls of bed room (Japanese style; putting muds on walls instead of wall paper). Diatomite is a natual material and its absorbent quiality is said good match to humid climate of Japan. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diatomaceous_earth作業風景BEFORE:AFTER:子ども部屋の天井。Ceiling of kid's room.
