Ashanti: First studio a loo-loo

Ashanti may be basking in the footlights of fame these days, but it wasn't always that way.
The R&B singer testified yesterday that she got her start in the music business cutting demos in a Bronx bathroom.

"The mike was set up in the bathroom," the sultry singer said in Manhattan Federal Court. "The neighbors used to complain and say we're playing the music too loud."

The home studio belonged to producer Genard Parker, who is suing Ashanti for allegedly reneging on a deal to pay him $4 million in royalties and let him produce two songs on her first album, which sold 4 million copies and won a Grammy.

"This case is about abandoning the people that help us succeed," Parker's lawyer, Jasmine Khalili, charged in her opening statement.

She and her manager-mom, Tina Douglas, teamed up with Parker when she was just 16.

They dumped him 16 months later, in October 1997, when he failed to get her a record deal.

During her testimony, Ashanti was shown a grainy video by Khalili in which she says that Parker had been a "great inspiration."

"He has a lot of ideas and music tracks," she says on the video, shot in May 1997. It was shown after she said she didn't remember ever making the comments. "I was 16 years old. I'm 24 right now," she offered as explanation.

Later, she told Khalili she said what she did in hopes of landing a record deal. "I wasn't lying," the Long Island-born diva said. "It was early on before anything was established."

"It was a little souped up," said Ashanti, who testified first to allow her to continue filming "John Tucker Must Die" in Vancouver.

Parker testified that when Ashanti came to him he was an established music producer and she was an aspiring artist looking to get a record contract. "I gave a great deal of knowledge and direction to Ashanti," he said. "I thought we had a great relationship."
