リポーターの話すスピードはそこそこ速いのですが、なんといっても得意分野（笑）。十分理解できました。
span：if a bridge spans an area of water, especially a river, it goes from one side to the other
Users cross borders and span continents to meet and swap information about just about anything.
commodity：a product that is bought and sold
Information has always been a commodity in the business world.
crack down：phrasal verb
to become more strict in dealing with a problem and punishing the people involved
Governments recognize this, too, and some are cracking down on what they do not like.
今日の単語は・・・span
期間という意味での名詞のspanはよく知っていても、動詞のspanはちょっと新鮮。ちなみに、spinの過去形という一面もあり。
ちょうどこの話は、他でもいろんな形で報道されていますね。私が最初に目に付いたのはCNNMoney.comから送られてくる FAST FORWARD こちら です。ニュースレターで気になる記事があるときだけお邪魔しています。
で、昨日配信されたレターの中にあったのが、これ↓

At my daughter's New York City high school her teachers tell her to not to use Wikipedia. When I talked to Jimmy Wales in Davos a few weeks ago, I expected him to be dismissive, perhaps even contemptuous, about such attitudes.
I は Fortuneの編集者 David Kirkpatrick で Jimmy Wales はWikipediaの設立者。
この編集者は高校の先生がWikipediaの使用を禁止するなんてナンセンス。撤回するように希望しているそうです。
Walesさんのコメント：
"I always say it's a matter of using Wikipedia appropriately," he says. "I always laugh when somebody tells high school kids not to use it at all. That's like telling them not to listen to rock music. Whether it should be something you should cite in a paper, that's another issue."

an article about it in Wikipedia, and it's almost sure to be reliable . But if the article talks about a goal being made at the last moment, that conceivably could be something a prankster slipped in and we missed.

結局、 it's almost sure to be reliable だけど、
A lot of the errors in Wikipedia are ludicrous jokes that just get overlooked.
ということは念頭に置いておく必要があるということですよね。
そして、Walesさんが今もっとも関心を持っているのが、
what he calls "a completely open-source search engine
で、
・Search is a fundamental part of the infrastructure of the Internet
・and unlike most of the infrastructure, today it's not transparent .
この、最後の基本的なインフラであるサーチエンジンだけれども、このエンジン部分が透明ではないということが、問題だという指摘。今回の多聴にもでてきた、マイクロソフトが自分の会社の記述に関して資金を提供して記事を書かせるという問題は結局のところ、情報操作ではないかとか。
この不透明さを訴えているのが、
We have no idea how things are ranked or why.
↑この箇所。まさにその通り。Googleなんて、広告費で検索上位につけますものね。
He believes that in the "open society" he seeks on the Internet, it's important to have mechanisms in place that enable people to "look under the hood" at the tools they use.
だから、WalesさんはWikipediaのようなものが大切だと信じている。
look under the hood は直訳は「ボンネットの中を見る」だけれども、構造をチェックしようというような意味のたとえ。
自分たちの使っているツールをブラックボックスにしないようにと。
It's not a complaint the average user of Google is likely to share.
↑Googleの問題とはまた別。
で、締めくくりがWalesさんのコメントで、
He promises a public prototype of the search product "within the next few months," and "something really functional in a year or so.
