アカデミーの組織には12の支部（Branch）があり、
Music Branch（約250人の作曲家、編曲者、オーケストレーター等が所属）では
カテゴリー毎に５つのノミネート作品を選出する。
Music Branchが授与する賞は次の３つである。

・Original Score：

作曲家のオリジナルによるドラマティック・アンダースコアの形式をとった
実質的な音楽の集合体（Substantial Body of Music）であり、ソース音楽は含まない

・Original Song：

オリジナルの音楽と歌詞によって構成された歌曲（主題歌）で、
映画の中でメロディと歌詞が明確に認識できるように演奏されているもの

・Original Song Score：

同一の作曲家によってオリジナルに書かれた5曲以上の歌曲から構成されるもの
