After two eras later, still ...

Late "Happy New Year" -and it was first New Year after the Imperial Era name changed .
Former Emperor -current Emperor Emeritus abdicated at the end of last April 30 and new Emperor took throne on May 1 .
So last year, December 23 was not national holiday anymore.
It's understandable, but at the same time, April 29 , the birthday of the Emperor of the longest era in modern Japan is still national holiday, changing the name even twice.

And some said that this Era was so long that our country and society changed so much during this Era and its impact is great.
Some who know the truth said that long consecutive holiday starting from this day called Golden Week is important for economy in our country.
Whatever the reason is, I secretly think that this National holiday can be regarded as the day to admonish the backward social system.

Nowadays, this Era name is often used as synonymous with outdated, anachronism, the old order -one of the synonyms is Galapagos .
It's not simply generation gap.
Under spontaneous population decline, population of older generation are larger in number than younger generation.
Then older generation have decision-making authority by force of numbers -it's shown at elections; younger voters are fewer in number and lower in voting rate.
Older generation criticize younger generation that they are ill-mannered and weak-willed.

Needless to say, there are Older-generation people who are humble, flexible and attend to various kinds of people impartially.
The problem is Older generations -especially MEN who are unable to get rid of illusion of Bubble era, blindly believe in seniority, romanticize how they went through hardship and pass down those "hardship" to younger generation in the form of harassment, cling to anachronism that women are supposed to be subordinate to men unconditionally and lechery is men's prerogative.
-Something else?
Bluntly speaking, those Older generations will die out, though -and when current Younger generation grow up to be Older generation, there is no assuring that future Younger generation don't complain about Older generation.
It's true that people tend to be inflexible as we get older
Then, what can we do to instead of lamenting today and feel discouraged about future?
There are things to learn from people elderly in age who are admired and respected by wide range of people
-For example, a veteran golfer mentions how he has kept on fighting as a golfer with four words ; fighting spirit, curiosity, competitive spirit, willingness to challenge -which can be expressed differently with each person.

In our country, under the current law, era name changes when Emperor changes.
So outwardly , this year 2020 Anno Domini is 2nd year of the current Imperial Era.
But as long as our country is ruled by moss-headed men mentioned above who assume our society is consisted of only healthy male fellow countrymen and don't update outdated mental structure,
　We could call this year as 95th year of the Longest era in modern Japan.
I could line up the name of those people, but I refrain.
　　　-Me? Last spring, at my workplace, we changed all the dating of documents to the Gregorian calendar in order to avoid confusion , and now I use Era name only on calendars, New Year's greeting cards -and legal and financial procedure scenes.
