American soldier who stationed at a military base in Japan killed two Japanese in a car accident on Mt.Fuji. He was sentenced to 3 years jail. US doctor in the base claimed that the soldier was suffering from acute mountain sickness. He was transferred to the custody in the US. This incident may have been reported in Japan, but it did not draw much attention of Japanese people.
He was paroled and immediately released without supervision. Behind this was a pressure campaign by his supporters led by his wife. President Biden touched upon this incident in the State of Union address, and vice president Harris raised the the case with Prime Minister Kishida. A senator of his home state sent twitters to Mr.Kishida and upon this soldier was released he tweeted "Japan owes family and the US an apology".
The article of a British journal reporting this incident says that Japanese politicians and mainstream media are reluctant to report it because they worry about the damage to US-Japan relations, and it points out the inequality there.
