3月のカブスとの東京開幕シリーズ中に撮影した長嶋さんの写真などを載せ、「心よりご冥福をお祈りいたします」と追悼した。

大谷と長嶋さんは2016年12月にインタビュー対談で初対面。ミスターが「負けるチームにスーパースターは生まれない」と話すなどスーパースター論を語らった。53分間の対談の中盤。当時22歳の大谷へ「長嶋さんに聞いてみたいことはありますか？」と問いかけると、打撃の“悩み”を打ち明けた。

「打席での心構えというか、どういう気持ちで打席に立っているか。配球を考えるのか、自分がどういうスイングをしたいかを優先するのかを聞いてみたいです」

長嶋さんは、間髪を入れずに、こう答えた。

「来た球を打つ。そして走る。投手の中には内角、外角と嫌らしい投手がいるけど、大した問題ではない。あと1つ、僕の場合は初球から打つ。1ボールからも打ちにいく。2ボールだったら打たないかな。2ボールになれば打者の勝ちだよ。1ストライク2ボール、1ストライク3ボールの時は勝負。そのカウントでは、その投手が一番いい球を投げてくる。それを必ず打つ、と思っていましたね」

つまり、大谷翔平は上記の長嶋さんに対して何度もうなづいたと言える。

バッターボックスに入って、まるで長嶋さんとの対話を思い出しているようだ。

Posting a photo of Nagashima taken during the Tokyo opening series against the Cubs in March, he mourned the loss, saying, "May he rest in peace."

Otani and Nagashima first met in an interview in December 2016. The two discussed superstar theory, with Mr. Nagashima saying, "Superstars are not born on losing teams." In the middle of the 53-minute conversation, Otani, who was 22 at the time, was asked, "Is there anything you would like to ask Nagashima?" and he confessed his "worries" about batting.

"I would like to ask you about your mindset at the plate, or what kind of feelings you have when you stand at the plate. Do you think about the pitch selection, or do you prioritize what kind of swing you want to make?"

Nagashima answered without a moment's hesitation.

"You hit the ball that comes to you. And you run. There are some pitchers who are tricky because they throw inside or outside, but it's not a big deal. And one more thing: I hit from the first pitch. I also go for it even if it's one ball. If it's two balls, I probably won't hit it. If it's two balls, the batter wins. When it's one strike and two balls, or one strike and three balls, it's a game. At that count, the pitcher throws the best pitch. I thought I would definitely hit it."

In other words, Shohei Ohtani nodded many times to Nagashima.

When he stepped into the batter's box, it was as if he was remembering his conversation with Nagashima.

We pray for the repose of the soul of Shigeo Nagashima.
