ゲジゲジとは、節足動物門・多足亜門・ムカデ綱に属する生き物の一種です。代表的な種類は「ゲジ（Scutigera coleoptrata）」であり、日本では「ゲジゲジ」という俗称でも親しまれています。正式な和名は単に「ゲジ」と呼ばれています。

まず、「ゲジゲジはムカデの一種なのか」という点について、正確に説明します。

分類上、ゲジゲジは「ムカデ綱 (Chilopoda)」に属しています。つまり、**生物学的には「ムカデの一種」**であり、間違いではありません。ただし、一般に「ムカデ」と聞いて多くの人が想像する「オオムカデ」（例えばトビズムカデなど）とは、目や科の段階で別れています。

ゲジゲジは「ゲジ目（Scutigeromorpha）」という独自の目に属し、さらに「ゲジ科（Scutigeridae）」に分類されます。一方、トビズムカデのような一般的なムカデは「オオムカデ目（Scolopendromorpha）」に属し、「オオムカデ科（Scolopendridae）」に分類されます。つまり、綱（ムカデ綱）までは同じですが、それ以下は違うということになります。

見た目も大きく異なります。

ゲジゲジは体が細長く、非常に長い脚を持ち、動きはとても素早いです。脚の数は通常15対（30本）で、まるで浮かぶように移動します。これに対してオオムカデ類は、太くずんぐりした体に、比較的短めの脚を持ち、地面を這うように移動します。

また毒の強さも違います。オオムカデは強力な毒を持ち、人間にも激しい痛みや腫れを引き起こしますが、ゲジゲジの毒は非常に弱く、人間に対してほぼ無害です。

生態面でも違いが見られます。

ゲジゲジは肉食性で、ゴキブリ、シロアリ、クモなどの小さな害虫を捕食します。そのため、家の中に現れても実際には害虫を駆除してくれる「益虫」と考えられています。夜行性で、人間にはあまり積極的に接近しません。

一方、オオムカデ類も肉食ですが、より攻撃的で、噛まれると大きな怪我につながることもあります。

ここまで整理すると、

• 生物学上はゲジゲジもムカデの一種
• 一般生活上ではゲジゲジとムカデは別物として認識されることが多い

Giant centipedes are also carnivorous but are more aggressive and can cause serious injuries if provoked.
