牢屋の鍵束をくわえた番犬を囚人たちが骨で懐柔しようとします。このシーン、ディズニーランドのカリブの海賊アトラクションにも実際にありますよね。ふふふふ。
ジ: You can keep doing that forever, the dog is never going to move.
囚: Oh , excuse us if we haven't resigned ourselves to the gallows just yet.
◆囚人の言葉は聞き取りがものすごく困難～。
resign は自動詞で「辞職する、退陣する」という意のアレ。＜resign oneself to＋名＞で「甘んじて従う、あきらめて～する」。gallows＝「絞首刑」
一方、エリザベスのお部屋。ベッドでくつろぐエリザベスと召使の会話です。この召使はエリザベスお嬢さまの気持ちをとてもよく知っているんです。ところで昔の湯たんぽって、こういうのだったんですねえ。ひっくり返したら火傷しそう。
召: There you go, Miss. It was a difficult day for you, I'm sure.
エ: I suspected Commodore Norrington would propose but I must admit , I wasn't entirely prepared for it.
召: Well, I meant you being threatened by that pirate. Sounds terrifying.
エ: Oh, yes, it was terrifying.
召: But the Commodore proposed. Fancy that. Now, that's a smart match, Miss, if it's not too bold to say.
エ: It is a smart match. He's a fine man; he's what any woman should dream of marrying.
召: Well, that Will Turner , he's a fine man, too.
エ: That is too bold.
召: Well, begging your pardon, Miss. It was not my place.
◆suspect＝「～と思う（suppose／guess）」。次の admit は「ミット」しか聞こえなかった。そんな動詞はな～い！ そうだよ、admit だよねえ。
◆また出ました、fancy。これはイギリス英語です。ハリー・ポッター『秘密の部屋』でも like の意で fancy がよく使われていました。
◆bold＝「ずうずうしい、厚かましい、でしゃばりな」。同意語は brave なので「大胆にも、恐れを知らない」のような意が入っているんでしょう。ここでは召使の分際で大胆にもお嬢さまに意見するなどと…という感じでしょうか。
同じ「ずうずうしい、厚かましい」という語で思い出されるのは、ノリントン提督がエリザベスにプロポーズするシーン。（ こちらを参照 ）
◆match＝「結婚相手」。これは“経済上の価値判断を伴う”ので、たとえば性格はいいのにお金がない『タイタニック』のジャックのような人は a smart match とは呼んでもらえないんですね。
次の what は何度聞いても what に聞こえない…。
◆place＝「役目」。
Ex. It's not your place to offer criticism. （君の役割は批判することではない。）
次回は「海賊襲撃」です。
明日から３日間で買出し＆お節料理つくりに明け暮れます。時間があればジャックの英語を聞きたいと思っていますが、どうなることやら。無理せずやりますので、みなさんも慌しい年末、お怪我などなさらないように！！
