Interview: Rick Nielsen talks Cheap Trick At Budokan track-by-track http://www.musicradar.com/news/guitars/interview-rick-nielsen-talks-cheap-trick-at-budokan-track-by-track-539192#!2 ↑リックが78年の「at 武道館」の各曲の解説をしています フラッシュなので 見れない方もいらっしゃるかと思いますので インタビュー記事をコピーしてみました 写真もいいですよね～ おまけに リックの解説を読みながら曲も聴けてしまいますよ Hello There "'Here we are! Welcome to the circus!' It's the first song of the first show of our first tour of Japan. It made sense to start with this one. "The reason why I wrote it goes back a ways: When we were an opening band, a lot of the time we wouldn't get a soundcheck. Hello There was our soundcheck. One instrument at a time, gunning it over and over... by the time Robin started singing, our mix was usually in place and we sounded good. "It's the best kind of song to start a show with. I've seen bands come out and begin their concerts with these long, slow, boring songs. Are they kidding, or what? It reminds me of somebody told me about a book once: ‘Yeah, you start to get into it after the first 150 pages.' Wow, that sounds like something I'd want to read! Come on... "Hello There is quick, it's good and it's easy to play." Come On, Come On "It's a fun sing-along. We have a few of them. Some are more poppy, others are rocking. Any time you can get the audience reacting to one of your songs, you're halfway there. "The chorus almost demands audience participation. It's a shouting out of ‘Come on, come on!' - even if you've never heard the song before, you know what to do. By the fourth chord, this thing is committed to memory. "Also, a song like this you can have a lot of fun with on stage. I don't pose per se, but my motions are... well, they're exaggerated. It's cool when you know what notes to hit. I think there's a lot of E's in this one." Lookout "I like this song. It's got a lot of layers and dimensions to it. It's kind of pop, but it's got that orchestrated middle part a la Dream Police. It builds up to a guitar-bass-drums crescendo that's pretty cool. "My guitar playing is... I was never into the whole guitar virtuoso thing. It's like, who cares? I'd rather be musical than technical. I always thought of myself as more of a rhythm player than a big soloist. You make do with what you've got. "Lookout is fun, it's fast, it starts and stops, it's loud. Basically, it's a Who pop song. We never emulated The Who, but if we ever stole anything from them, at least we changed the key." Big Eyes "There's some fun turnarounds and riffs in Big Eyes. It's one of those songs that sounds easier than it really is. It seems like it's a three-chord rock song, but it's not - there's a lot going on. "We don't play it just so we can confuse ourselves, but it seems like that sometimes. The chorus is pretty reminiscent of our being influenced by Alex Harvey, even though it's different from Alex Harvey. "This is a great version. I sing all of the high notes. My voice is kind of crappy, and Robin's voice is too good. Tom's voice is low, with a bit of Midwest nasal twang. Together, we don't sound too pretty, but we don't sound like a bunch of drunk guys in Newcastle, either. We sound just right." Need Your Love "A good, heavy pop song. It's too long, but there's a lot of dynamics. Lyrically, it's our not-up-to-the-challenge of a John Lennon song. "I think of this one, and the image is of watching a drunk guy who trashes around at a show, bangs his head against a wall, jumps into a moshpit, but then he gets out and goes to his girlfriend and asks, ‘Are you OK, honey?' If you wanna get laid, you have to be nice occasionally. "That's why Robin's voice is so great: he can go from being the nasty villain to the sweet, lovable guy, and switch them back and forth. A song that's gooey all the way through is disgusting; on the other hand, if you're just ‘Kill your mother, kill your father, kill your dog!' the whole time, that's too extreme the other way. This song has the balance." Ain't That A Shame "We were asked to do a cover song for the show, which was fine - we'd always done some covers. One day, we were listening to John Lennon's Rock ‘n' Roll album, and one of the songs on there is Ain't That A Shame. ‘Hey, if it's good enough for John Lennon...' "We did our own version of it, throwing in all the breaks and build-ups. It's a simple three-chord song, so we made it way harder than it had to be. We kind of made it a cross between the ending of The Beatles' The End and something from the Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band. "The ending is kind of anything goes. For the audience, it's like, ‘Listen to that! No, wait, listen to that! But wait... listen to that!' We weren't trying to top one another. We were just up going, ‘This is cool!'" I Want You To Want Me "The way we did it at Budokan was the was we played it in the clubs. In the studio, it got wimped out and toned down, very namby-pamby. We didn't want to play it as candied as the In Color version, even though the Japanese liked that one. So we decided to rock. You don't have that honky-tonk piano. It's much heavier. "Lyrically, c'mon - ‘I want you to want me/ I'm begging you to beg me...' There's a little cynicism in it; it's not all lovey-dovey, but it says what it needs to say. Some people's lyrics have things like ‘The cuspice of the moon is on the 13th day.' Huh? You have to read Aleister Crowley to figure out a verse. Give me a break." Surrender "The song had just come out in Japan when we played it at Budokan. It's another sing-along. Truthfully, I was always amazed that people liked it so much, because the story has double-entendres, triple-entendres, things are half true, half open to interpretation - it's a lot. "We talked slowly between songs. The promoters told us that the audience really wanted to hear us and understand every word. That's why you hear Robin's complete intro to Surrender - ‘This next one is the first song... ‘ - the way the mics were placed, you got the echo from him with the crowd screaming. "Everybody's parents are weirdos. And if you don't think your parents are weird, your friends do. That's what I wrote about in Surrender. I'm kind of making fun of everybody, but I'm telling you to keep your head up. "It's funny: People still love the song. I've got tapes of Green Day and the Foo Fighters playing it. Even Taylor Swift has done it. It's got a good hook, and it's not played out. "The excitement is kind of built in. We start off on B-flat and then modulate to D, and then we modulate to C. It always went over well. Did we know it was a classic? We knew it was a good song. That very first line: ‘Mother told me, yes, she told me...' You feel like you know it the minute you hear it." Goodnight Now "Well, let's see... We know the intro. Now, get the heck out of here! [laughs] I refer back to Hello There. It's us saying good night without really saying ‘good night.' Not yet anyhow. "You want people to leave on adrenaline, but still wanting more. I can't stand it when groups come back for an encore and they play some slow thing. Oh, brother! It's like, ‘Had I known that, I would've left.'" Clock Strikes Ten "Once again, it's an encore, but as Martin Mull said, ‘We saved the best for last.' Here we are at Budokan, and we're going out on a hit. The audience went crazy. Beat that! "Musically, the song is pretty uncomplicated. I play a riff on the A and go straight down, hitting every note. Nobody does a riff that simple, but that's why I did it. "The song gets to the point about going nuts on a Saturday night. And not like Elton John's Saturday Night's Alright For Fighting - that's too cerebral. Here we're like, ‘Clock strikes ten, it's a Saturday Night/ imagine what we're doing tonight." That's it. Nothing else to think about."

He's perfect for Tampa Bay, too: blond, tan, pretty. And a couple times a year, he'll good-neighborly satisfy our rock jones with a local gig, howling out an I Want You to Want Me you can hear from Pass-a-Grille to Lutz. "It took me a little to acclimate after living in Chicago all my life," he says during a recent visit to the St. Petersburg Times. "But hey, every day I wake up and the sun is shining. I wouldn't move or live anywhere else." Over the years, Zander has played the Forum and the Tampa amp, and his band famously re-created Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band at a sold-out Ruth Eckerd Hall. On Saturday, the 58-year-old and his Tricksters (sans drummer Bun E. Carlos) will uncork their biggest show on these shores: a full re-creation of 1979's Dream Police LP with an orchestra and a choir, all in the intimate setting of Jannus Live. "We're down here and we're going to have a big party on New Year's Eve," says Zander, who chatted with Sean Daly and Steve Spears in the posh Stuck in the '80s recording studios. Here's an excerpt from the interview: Does all this New Year's Eve hullabaloo mean you consider Dream Police to be the ultimate Cheap Trick album? No, not necessarily, but it was a turning-point album, a door-opening album for us. It was diverse, with a song like Voices (which has grown new life thanks to its usage on TV sitcom How I Met Your Mother) and a song like Gonna Raise Hell back-to-back. We started stretching out a lot, and it opened up new horizons for our music. A la your Beatles experiment with Sgt. Pepper's, Dream Police lends itself to an over-the-top spectacle. Yeah, it was an album that utilized other instruments: cello, violins, orchestrated instruments. So we decided maybe we should re-create that album live, like we did with Sgt. Pepper's the last couple years. It seemed like a logical thing for us to do with our own music. So it's Cheap Trick doing Dream Police top to bottom, and then the second half is a greatest-hits package. About two hours. We've brought in an orchestra, which sits above us. We have a choir called the Mind Choir. Rick's kids (guitarist Rick Nielsen) are playing in the band. Ian, one of my sons, is in the choir. We had to reconfigure the stage because we've brought in so much stuff. There'll be a lot of video and crowd interaction. 1979 wasn't just a turning point for Cheap Trick but for pop music in general, slick genres giving way to rawer sounds. It was a struggle during the '70s. That's one of the reasons we put our band together, just so we could make fun of everyone else around us. We'd do a parody of Queen - not that we didn't like the band Queen. We were just tired of the same stuff happening. The other big thing was disco. When the Ramones and the Sex Pistols and Cheap Trick came out, it was a backlash against dance music, because no one was listening to rock music anymore, and if they were, it was classical style, big huge things. And we were just a rock band. It was a struggle to get anyone to buy our first record in '77. But by the time our third record came out, we had won some fans. We'd done well in Europe. In Japan, we had a couple hits. Yes. Here we go. Take us to Japan in the late '70s. You guys were golden gods there. We had a few hits here and there, but not in the United States. We had one song, Surrender, which was doing okay on the radio charts here. So we went to Japan. We figured, Hey, we're popular over there! But we didn't realize how popular we were. I remember sitting on the airplane, and wondering who all those people out there were. It must be the president's here or something. And it was for us! I couldn't believe it! We had Dream Police in the can, but we had recorded a live album in Japan (At Budokan) that had taken over the world! We had to delay Dream Police for over a year. By then it was 1979, and rock was coming back. We were getting back to real rock music. What have you learned about Dream Police since you've jumped back into it? I learned how hard it was to do! Those songs on that album are pretty difficult songs to sing. I don't know if anybody realizes that or not. Of all the records we've done, that's one of the toughest for me. You know, when we did the record, I wasn't pleased with the way the producer (Tom Werman) was doing it. He was rarely there. He wasn't pleased with the fact that we wanted to use orchestration on the record. He didn't like some of the performances by us. I mean, we are the band, not him! So when we weren't there, he'd bring in extra players. So we'd have to go back and erase stuff. It got to be a pain in the you-know-what. No offense, Tom. You and guitarist Rick Nielsen, he of the multinecked guitars and manic stage act, lead the band like a two-headed monster. What's your relationship like? We always got along pretty well. We weren't brothers. We didn't live in the same house. We didn't have a history of telling secrets on each other. We stayed out of each other's hair; that's true with all the guys in the band. We didn't c--- in each other's back yards, so we never had a chance to step in it. Once again, the Rock Hall of Fame has inducted another class, and once again Cheap Trick is on the outside looking in. Does that tick you off? I don't even know if I would go if we were nominated, to be honest. To me, I was disappointed in them a long, long time ago. Look at a band like Kiss (who isn't in the hall, either). Come on! There's a number of things they look at, but who the hell cares? I don't need someone like them to tell me how great I am. You need us! Yes! Hey, I think our band is pretty d--- good. We wouldn't be around for 36, 37 years now if we weren't pretty decent.

やっと きました
やっと きましたファンクラブからのクリスマスカード・・・ ↑クリックで大きくなります去年も28日でしたが・・・今年は 大晦日遅すぎです去年までは切手が貼ってあって消印が押されていたので 投函日がわかったのですが今年から印刷されたメール便のようなシールに変わってしまいました（毎年の切手を見るのも楽しみでしたが…）住所も去年までは 宛名シールに印刷されたものが貼られていましたが今年から直接宛名面に印刷されてますね後 去年まであったバーコードがなくなりました郵便のシステムが変わったんでしょうねそれで すこし手間取ったんでしょうか？？でも 昨日の日記にも書きましたがアメリカのファンには19日には届いてるんですよね・・・そうなると やはり投函日がかなり遅かった可能性がありますねでも 何はともあれ無事に届いたのでこれでやっと 20日からPCにつなぎっぱなしだった複合機をしまうことができます
