Research Hub
There are great quantities of useful information on tiling and related topics . Without checking out "
the best way to do the job " often leads to failure in the short or long term. The problems caused by a failure often compound when the building is nearing completion or occupied. These problems may continue for the life of a building but usually have to be remedied after completion. Repairs can be major and expensive. At the planning stage consideration must be given to the environment conditions, intended use and accessibility needs . Specifications should be detailed and clear with reference to the relevant standards to ensure adequate guidance.

Manufacturers specifications
Adhering to the manufacturers specifications for; Substrates, Waterproofing systems, Adhesives, Tiles, Grouts etc... is critical in avoiding defects and failures.

Involving the tiler in the planning stage will avoid some common problems.

Unfortunately to often we are contacted after the substrate is fixed and the tiles are purchased.

A common avoidable problem we see is the tile weight per m² is heavier than the allowable weight per m² for the wall substrate.

Standards
Standards are a technical specification or practice to be used as a guideline for the standard production of a product, or the carrying out of a process, such as testing or providing a service.

A Standard Publication is a document that are collective works, with committees working to produce publications that meet the needs and demands of society at large. These committees can consist of representatives and experts from all organizations with a vested interest in the subject the standard pertains to.

Standards are not generally used as law or to impose regulations; but are rather designed to be used voluntarily to help manufacturers, users and consumers.

However, some laws or legal regulations do make compliance with Standards compulsory.
