Performance

Standard for both the Base and Sport models of the 2013 Lexus RX SUV Crossover is a solid 3.5-liter V6 engine, which delivers an impressive 270 horsepower and 248 pound-feet of torque. This vehicle comes standard as front-wheel drive, with all-wheel drive being optional on both trims. The only transmission available is a six-speed automatic. Zero to 60 mph is achieved in 7.1 seconds, and maximum towing capacity is 3,500 pounds.

With this great acceleration and towing power, you would think that fuel economy would be horrible, but it actually is respectable at 18 mpg in the city and 25 mpg on the highway. It should be noted that those opting for the F Sport package will have a standard eight-speed automatic and all-wheel drive.

The RX has a nice 38.8 feet turning circle, which means it is a lot easier to park and maneuver than you might think. Also, the four-wheel independent suspension absorbs bumpers and holes like a sponge to grant all passengers with a smooth and comfortable ride. The suspension in the Sport is not overly firm either. The RX offers a silent ride.

Technology

• Rear Entertainment System: LCD screens are place behind the front headrests for rear seat passengers to watch movies or play games. They can work independently or together.
• Sound System: The Mark Levinson premium surround system is unparalleled. It uses 330 watts of power with 15 speakers.
• Lexus Enform: Navigation and emergency assistance can be received with the touch of a button 24/7.
• Navigation: The voice-activated system gives you turn-by-turn directions and real-time weather and traffic on a gorgeous heads up display.

Other technology and entertainment features either standard or optional include Bluetooth technology, Lexus Enform App Suite, HomeLink remote control, USB connection, SiriusXM satellite radio, iPod integration, speed sensitive volume control.

Safety

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety gave the 2013 RX 350 an impressive “Good” rating for frontal, roof and side protection crash tests. Unfortunately, braking capabilities fail to impress, taking a long 133 feet to stop from 60 mph.

A 10 airbag system leads this class, and Safety Connect provides emergency help when needed. Just a few of the many safety features include:

• Active front headrests
• Tire pressure monitoring
• Pre-collision system
• Stability control
• Vehicle dynamics integrated management
• ABS with brake assist
• Reinforced body
• Blind spot monitoring
• Rain sensing wipers
• Smart stop technology
• Whiplash protection system in front head restraints
• Post collision safety system
• Turn signal mirrors
• Dusk sensing headlamps
• Engine immobilizer
• Emergency braking assist
• Rear door safety locks
• Antitheft alarm
• Child seat anchors

Appearance

The 2013 RX gets a revised style that is picture-perfect from every angle. Chiseled lines are showcased by nine sensational different colors and the aerodynamic body is finished off with a rear spoiler. Body colored mirrors, door handles and bumpers offer a harmonious look while the handsome wheels steal the show.

Comfort

Falling in love with the RX is easy when you slip inside the cabin for the first time. High-quality leather and rich wood complete the cutting edge features found throughout. The controls are thoughtfully placed, but there are so many that it can be a little overwhelming at first.

Seating for five is the only option as no third row seat is available. That being said, all five passengers will be cradled in comfort by supportive seats and an abundance of leg and head room. The rear seat even slides and reclines for optimal comfort.

Cargo

The 2013 Lexus RX excels in cargo capacity. With the rear seat in place, you enjoy nearly 40 cubic feet, but when you fold it, you get 80 cubic feet. Both these numbers are hard to compete with.
