Performance

All three available trims of the 2013 Mazda CX-5 SUV are powered by a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine, with your choice of a six-speed automatic or six-speed manual transmission. Zero to 60 mph is achieved in 9.3 seconds due to 155 horsepower and 150 pound-feet of torque. While this may seem slow, it is actually competitive with other four-cylinder crossovers in this class.

The CX-5 comes standard as a front-wheel drive, but all-wheel drive is available on all three trims. Surprisingly, this vehicle can even tow up to 2,000 pounds, when properly equipped. While it may be lacking in power, it does make up for it in fuel-economy, returning 26 mpg in the city and 33 mpg on the highway. These are numbers any driver will appreciate.

If you are looking for a vehicle that is fun and confident on the road, the CX-5 is it. The suspension, steering and braking work harmoniously to create a phenomenal driving experience. It is a little sluggish, but the automatic shifts smooth and the four-wheel independent suspension offers an incredibly comfortable ride. Unfortunately, it does get a little noisy on the highway.

Technology

• Navigation: An in-dash TomTom navigation system features intuitive voice recognition so you never have to take your hands off the road. TomTom uses real-time traffic to deliver directions, and it has six million points of interest to offer, such as gas stations, hospitals, restaurants, etc.
• Sound System: The surround system by Bose Centerpoint with AudioPilot and nine premium speakers is worth upgrading to.
• Bluetooth: Send, receive and end calls without ever taking your hands from the steering wheel.
• SiriusXM: Every CX-5 comes with a 4-month subscription to SiriusXM satellite radio to enjoy over 120 commercial-free stations of music and broadcasting.

Other technology and entertainment features include USB connection, MP3 audio input and speed sensitive volume control.

Safety

When tested by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, the CX-5 scored the best possible rating in side, roof and frontal protection. Thoughtfully positioned airbags with rollover sensors and the use of ultra-high tensile steel used throughout the frame contributes to these fantastic results. When braking was tested, it came out ahead once again, taking 121 feet to stop from 60 mph. Safety features include:

• Dynamic stability control
• Blind spot monitoring
• Tire-pressure monitoring
• Traction control
• Engine immobilizer
• Antilock brakes
• Child seat anchors
• Emergency braking assist
• Turn signal mirrors
• Whiplash protection system in front headrests
• Electronic brakeforce distribution
• Front seatbelt pretensioners
• Rear door safety locks

Appearance

With a chiseled and somewhat beefy body, the 2013 CX-5 demands attention on the road. It boasts bold KODO-inspired lines, sloping roofline and a spoiler that reduces turbulence by managing air flow. Sophisticated headlamps, tinted privacy glass and attractive 17-inch aluminum alloy wheels complement the body colored door handles and mirrors nicely.

Comfort

While you might expect the use of cheap material, like reflective chrome and fake wood at this price point, the cabin of the CX-5 offers a pleasant surprise. The setup is modern and functional, but the navigation system is a bit slower than those found in other vehicles.

Also, the rear seats are just as comfortable as the front seats and all passengers enjoy ample leg room. Mazda really stepped up its game when designing this interior.

Cargo

Not only is there plenty of cargo space, you don’t have to work to get it. Before folding the rear seat, an innovative folding mechanism lowers the bottom part so you get nearly a flat load floor to enjoy. With the rear seat in place, there are 36 cubic feet available, but fold the seat to enjoy 65 cubes.
