Performance

The 2018 Mercedes-Benz G-Class SUV units are powered by gasoline-fed V8 and V12 engines. The G550 and G550 4x4 both come in 4.0-liter biturbo V8 engines. The two share the same output of 416 hp and 450 lb-ft of torque. Standard in the auto is a seven-speed automatic transmission. The G550 has a zero to 60 mph acceleration of 5.8 seconds while it takes the off-roader G550 4x4 to cover that in 7.3 seconds because of its bulkier frame. The high-performance Mercedes-AMG models of the 2018 G-Class starts with the G63 with a 5.5-liter biturbo V8 producing 563 hp and 561 lb-ft of torque. It can sprint from zero to 60 mph in mere 5.3 seconds. The 2018 Mercedes-AMG G65 is equipped with a powerful 6.0-liter biturbo V12 engine. The range-topping unit of the G-Class has 621 hp and 738 lb-ft of torque. The numbers help propel the AMG G65 from zero to 60 mph in 5.2 seconds. It should be noted that Mercedes just unveiled a new G-Class bearing the 2019 model year. It features significant performance upgrades across the G550, G550 4x4 and AMG G63 trims. This is thanks to the downsized engines of the G500 and G500 4x4, reduced weight of the vehicles, and boost in outputs. A -Final Edition- of the AMG G65 has also been revealed, but its changes are only limited to its aesthetics.

Technology

Standard in the 2018 G-Class include parking sensors, rearview cam, WiFi capability, Bluetooth, Apple Carplay and Android Auto integration, Mercedes COMAND infotainment system, advanced navigation, 12-speaker Harman Kardon sound system, rear-seat entertainment system, central display, adaptive cruise control, parking sensors in front and in the rear, blind spot monitoring, and dual-zone climate control. There are optional packages that can be installed to optimize the navigation, communication, safety and comfort elements of the G-Class. These include the optional mbrace packages. We highly appreciate the capabilities of the mbrace Connect system particularly its feature that allows the owner of the vehicle to take over some of its functions like starting the vehicle and locking/unlocking its doors using a smartphone or a personal computer. New owners of a G-Class will probably take some time to master the system of the SUV that is operated through a central controller instead of a more user-friendly touchscreen device.

Safety

There's no data available yet in relation to the crash test results of the 2018 Mercedes-Benz G-Class from agencies like the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). Nonetheless, the 2018 G-Class is fitted with the basic safety elements such as airbags located at the driver, passenger, front and rear areas. Then, the range includes 4-wheel ABS, 4-wheel disc brakes, child safety locks, daytime running lights, electronic stability control, brake assist, blind spot monitoring, automatic headlamps, traction control, turn signal mirrors, and front tow hooks.

Appearance

The 2018 Mercedes-Benz G-Class carries the signature styling of its earliest version, which is the Gelandewagen or G-Wagen, that was sold in 1979. Therefore, its body remains boxy up to this day. This definitely earns a nod of approval from the hardcore fans of Mercedes and the G-Class, but this may not be the case with buyers who are looking for an SUV with a modern and sporty appeal. The G-Class is defined by its sharp corners, straight body lines, trapezoidal wheel arches, rounded headlamps, rectangular taillights, rear spare wheel cap, sunroof, and rectangular front grille with horizontal slats protected by a brush guard. The styling details of the G-Class differ each trim. Subtle changes in the bumpers, front grille, side sills, exhausts, wheels, tires, lights, fenders and DRL can be seen in trims above the G550. While the AMG units focus more on power and they are highlighted by their more aggressive looks, the G550 4x4 centers on optimizing the off-road capabilities of the G-Class. The major changes in the more rugged G550 4x4's setup are evident in its higher suspension, portal axles plus the combination of its off-road wheels and tires. Compared to the 2017 G-Class, the 2018 model is virtually the same. Mercedes only introduced new paint finishes to choose from in the range. As for the 2019 models, the German automaker just fitted the G-Class range with updated front grille, lighting, and bumpers.

Comfort

The trade-off for the G-Class' impressive power is that it takes a toll in its handling. Steering can be a struggle especially if you are not used to driving this thing. The quick speed of the auto means you might find yourself entering into a bend sooner than you might realize. When you do, you will likely struggle with its slow steering. On the lighter side, the cabin of the SUV certainly provides a premium feel with its high-quality of materials. It can accommodate up to five adults inside. Moreover, there is plenty of headroom, though taller individuals might find its legroom somewhat inadequate.

Cargo

The 2018 G-Class offers plenty of cargo space. There is 38.6 cu-ft space behind the rear seats for your luggage. Folding the rear seats will increase its storage capacity to 79.5 cu-ft.
