Performance

The 2013 Outback 2.5i Premium SUV Wagon is powered by a fuel-efficient, horizontally opposed, 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine. You have your choice between a six-speed manual or continuously variable transmission. Don’t expect much acceleration or passing power on the highway though, as it produces only 174 horsepower and 175 pound-feet of torque. This is not a vehicle you buy for speed, but it is a practical sport utility vehicle for those on a budget. Fuel economy is fantastic at 24 mpg in the city and 30 mpg on the highway. The 2.5i Premium certainly is not going to tow your boat, but it can handle a pair of jet skis or snowmobiles with no problem, as it has a 2,700-pound towing capacity. While categorized as an SUV, this vehicle will handle more like a car. Its super small turning circle of only 36.8 feet allows you to park and maneuver in tight spaces with ease. On the downside, the steering is a bit vague.

Technology

• Audio - Standard is a six-speaker audio system with Bluetooth audio streaming, USB port and auxiliary jack, but you may want to upgrade to the Harman Kardon nine-speaker system with 440 watts and SiriusXM satellite radio.
• Bluetooth - Never take your hands off the wheel or your eyes off the road to send, end and receive calls with Bluetooth wireless telecommunications.
• Rear View Camera - This optional feature allows you to see what is behind you when you put the vehicle in reverse.
• Steering Wheel Controls - When buttons are at your fingertips right on the steering wheel, it eliminates having to look away from the road to fumble with controls.

Safety

Will this be the fourth year in a row that the Outback line is rated as a top pick by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety? It certainly could be! It has already been given a “Good” rating for roof, front and side-impact crash tests. Just a few safety features include:
• Vehicle dynamics control
• Brake assist
• Electronic brakeforce distribution
• LATCH child rear seat system
• Inside trunk release
• Rear vision camera
• Adaptive cruise control
• Tire pressure monitoring
• Stability control
• Engine immobilizer
• Rear door safety locks
• Remote anti-theft alarm

Appearance

The Outback 2.5i Premium pretty much looks like a supersized wagon. It is fun and sporty, and just looks like it would be a good time to drive. Body-colored mirrors and door handles offer a more harmonious look while roof racks, privacy glass and 17-inch six-spoke aluminum alloy wheels finish the look off.

Comfort

Many drivers will feel a little disappointed when they slip inside the passenger cabin, as the sporty feel of the outside is not continued inside. The dash is simple and the controls are thoughtfully placed, but there is nothing to get excited about. There is a lot of hard plastic used throughout. The seats are relatively comfortable in both rows and covered in either off-black of ivory cloth. Passengers in both rows will appreciate ample leg and head room and the rear seat even reclines for increased comfort.

Cargo

There is a lot more cargo space in the Outback 2.5i Premium than you might expect. Behind the rear seat you enjoy 34.3 cubic feet full time. When you fold that seat down, there is 71.3 cubes, which is more than the Edge and about even with Honda CR-V .
