Telsa is the culmination of two teams that decided in 2003 that they wanted to commercialize a sports car that was entirely electric. It was an innovative idea that had not been tackled previously and they came together to create Telsa. The name was derived from electrical engineer and physicist Nikola Tesla. The Roadster was the first fruit of their labor and was the first sports car that runs off of a battery electric system. It was also the first electric vehicle that could be used on the highway to be produced in the United States. The Roadster was the first Telsa Coupe available for purchase.

Production of the Telsa Roadster began in 2008. During the years of 2008 to 2011, the company would sell 2100 Roadsters in a total of thirty-one countries around the world. The Roadster utilized a lithium-ion battery and was the first of its kind to do so. It would also be the only electric car capable of traveling over two hundred miles per charge. To help round out the lists of first that were acquired by the Telsa Roadster, it was the first electric car to participate and win the Monte Carlo Alternative Energy Rally in March of 2010.

The US EPA tested the Telsa Coupe and found that it was capable of a distance of 244 miles on one single charge. This was the most of any electric car on the market. It could also reach speeds from 0 to 60 in an impressive time of 3.7 seconds. This provides a realistic sports car driving experience in an electric car. The Roadster also boasts many features that help to make it stand out in the electric car market as the sports car that it was originally designed to be.

Unfortunately, Telsa had limited supplies of certain components to make the Tesla coupe and those supplies have almost run out due to a contract expiration with the company that provides them. This has caused them to stop orders for the Roadster so that the company can be sure to fill all orders. They will continue to sell the Telsa Roadster through early 2012 before the parts are depleted and sales must stop altogether. The company is currently focused on meeting the demands that already exist before they consider a new, revised model with new components.

The first Telsa coupe was unveiled in Santa Monica, California in 2006 at an invitation only event. The first car off of the production line was delivered in February of 2008 to the company's co-founder and Chairman. Tesla expects to create an updated generation of the Roadster over the next couple of years and use new parts from a new supplier. The expected introduction date of that generation is sometime in 2014. The goal of the company was to create the first electric sports car and that goal was achieved and exceeded by the popularity of the Roadster.
