The 2011 Lotus Elise SPS is an available upgrade to the Elise and Elise CR. The goal behind the development of this option was to provide drivers with the perfect combination of optimal performance and ease of driving in heavy traffic. This is achieved through an innovative gearbox unique to the brand. It carries on the many lucrative aspects of the CR model. This includes an exotic exterior, a stylish, comfortable (unless you happen to be tall or large) interior and an impressive level of horsepower achieved through a light weight design. This upgrade is sure to lower the deprecation rate of the vehicle even further.

The 2011 Lotus Elise SPS has been known to both impress and disappoint critics. The appearance, well-known to turn the heads of passing pedestrians, received 5 out of 5 stars. Performance received 4 stars out of 5, made possible more so by the impressive SPS transmission of the vehicle than the engine size. However, only 3.5 stars were given for comfort, due to the car's small size (an even lower score could be expected among larger passengers). Although stylish, the interior of the Lotus Elise SPS may not seem impressive at a first glance. This is due to the specialized racing seats that only feature thin cushioning in certain places. As it turns out, thought, these cushions have been strategically placed to make the keep the passenger comfortable for short and long trips alike while still keeping the car's weight down. The steering wheel also appears smaller than it should be, but it's actually carefully placed to facilitate easy reach and excellent handling. It is also adorned with suede inserts to improve its style and comfort level. The instrument gauge behind it also features a mark that helps the driver find the straight position of the front wheels.

Of course, the interior does have its faults. This is to be expected in a car that strives to keep weight as low as possible. If the 2011 CR model is chosen for the SPS upgrade, air conditioning will not be included as a base option; instead, drivers must opt for it as a premium and pay more if they do. This is especially detrimental during warm raining days, when drivers will be unable to find relief by rolling down their windows or the convertible top. The space within the cab is also very limited. This is detrimental for larger drivers, who really should avoid the vehicle altogether.

At first, the 2011 Lotus Elise SPS' engine seems weak: a 1.8 liter machine with 134 bhp. But before its size is dismissed, it's important to remember that the convertible was designed as both a lightweight and aerodynamic vehicle. The engine still manages to propel the convertible from 0 to 60 mph in only 6.1 seconds. Gas mileage and emissions are also low. It gets up to 27 mpg and only outputs 149 g/km of CO2. The utilization of the Valvematic System, alongside the dual Variable Valve Timing-intelligent features, brings this all together.

Safety has been taken into account as much as possible with the lightweight Lotus Elise SPS. The coupe features a racing brake system that responds quite well. Unfortunately, nothing more than the thin doors are provided to protect against a side impact, leaving passengers under protected in such an event.
