The design of the Nissan Leaf Electric Sedan is based on many popular sedans and hatchbacks. It uses an 80kw (110 hp) electric motor that is powered by an 86 megajoules lithium ion battery. The battery is placed underneath the seats to help free space and keep gravity where it should be. The batter is also guaranteed for 8 years or 100,000 miles by Nissan. The main battery is not the only one on the vehicle as there is an auxiliary battery that is designed to power features like computer, audio, headlights and wipers. There is a small solar panel in back that helps charge the battery.

The range for the battery will depend greatly on the driving conditions, weather and what is being used in the vehicle. The US EPA tested the Nissan Leaf Electric Sedan and concluded that the range was approximately 73 miles. Other sources, such as the FTC, disagree and put the range between 96 and 110 miles. Charging of the battery can be done through both typical charging or a fast charging device. Depending on which is used, it can take anywhere from 30 minutes to 8 hours or more to fully charge the vehicle.

The Nissan Leaf Electric Sedan was the first full electric vehicle offered to American buyers and among the only offered to mimic the style and design of most luxury sedans. With a roomy cabin that easily fits four adults, no noise, quick acceleration, and excellent visibility it will be hard to tell that one is in an electric sedan. The downside is that charging stations are limited in quantity and location and that could pose problems with long trips. While the Leaf certainly will please the fan of the electric car, it may not be the best alternative for everyone depending on their driving habits and preferences.

The Nissan Leaf Electric Sedan comes in two trims, the SV and the SL. While both can rival the features and comfort of a luxury sedan, the SL is the top grade trim available. The SV features LED headlamps, 16 inch alloy wheels, heated mirrors, battery heater, accessories (full power), keyless entry and ignition, climate control that is automatic, cruise control, steering wheel that is heated tilt-only, height adjustable driver's seat, heated seats, cloth upholstery from recycled materials, 60/40 split folding rear seat, Bluetooth, automatic dimming rearview mirror, trip computer, navigation system, six speaker audio system with CD player and satellite radio and an iPod interface.

The Nissan Leaf Electric Sedan SL trim takes those features and then adds spoiler mounted solar panel, automatic headlights, foglights, rearview camera, cargo cover and a quick charge port. Both models can also have the Nissan Connection which is a remote vehicle access system. Both also come with standard safety features like antilock brakes, stability and traction control, front side airbags, side curtain airbags.
