More Used Smart Coupe Reviews / All Smart Cars

The Smart Pure coupe has many standard features. It hash cloth upholstery, a passenger seat that can fold down, a leather steering wheel, an outside temperature listing, a rear window defroster and rear wiper, a series of power locks, a remote keyless entry device and even some all season tires that work with steel wheels. There is no radio here but it can work with a separate installation. There are two optional radios with two speaker each. It is a AM/FM/CD unit, while the premium radio choice has a 6 disc changer and MP3 support. Other things to find here include an air conditioning system with an automatic temperature control and filter, an alarm, power steering, a series of heated seats, a metallic finish and even silver paint to use at the safety cell.

The Smart Pure coupe hatchback has a 1.0L 3 cylinder engine from Mitsubishi at the back. It has 70 hp and 68 lb/ft torque. This uses a 5 speed manual transmission. The shifter on the console works well.

At only 106.1 inches long overall, 61.4 inches wide, 60.7 inches tall and 1808 pounds, the Smart Pure coupe hatchback is the smallest car offered in the United States. Compared to a Mini Cooper, which is nearly 40 inches longer and more than 750 pounds heavier, it's positively tiny. While the length and width are quite small, the Fortwo is taller than the Honda Fit, which gives it plenty of inside space. In fact, the seats are very roomy, as the Smart car makes efficient use of every inch of space.

The Smart Pure coupe hatchback is built by MB, which guarantees that it offers a great amount of safety features that come standard. These include side curtain airbags in the coupe, knee airbags, antilock brakes on all braking parts, a hill-hold assist system, stability and traction control. In brake testing, the Fortwo Pure came to a stop from 60 mph in 124 feet -- a better-than-average distance for such a small subcompact.

The car is fun and easy to drive at lower speeds on city streets, but bumps and winds toss the car a little too much for comfort on highways at higher speeds. The automated transmission is a fairly crude shifter, making for rough movement through the gears. No one would mistake the Smart Pure coupe hatchback for a luxury car, but it is plenty of fun to drive and comfortable enough for short trips around town. Younger drivers who hardly pay attention to such things will likely never notice the driving drawbacks, and will instead look at the Fortwo for its curb appeal and clever body style.
