The first model of this vehicle was introduced in 1950. The vehicle was among the first passenger vans, as well as, cargo vehicles to be introduced. As it is with numerous models of vehicles, this van has earned itself a set of nicknames such as, microbus, minivan and hippie van due to it liking during the counterculture movement in the 1960s.

The motor industry is always on competition, the Volkswagen van had many competitors manufactured by other motor companies. Other competing brands emerged from the United States and Europe. In the US, competing models were; Ford Econoline, Dodge A100 and Chevrolet Corvair 95 Corvan. The latter model was developed with a rear engine as the Volkswagen Van had. Europe's competing brands were, Renault Estafette and Ford Transit. To the 21st century, the Volkswagen vans are still in production with this kind of van still available in various types in 2010 as passenger vans, cargo vans and pickup trucks.

This van was available in several models such as, Panel van which was used in deliveries since it had no side windows or seats at the back. There was also the bus kind of bus which was used for passengers since it had a comfier interior, the flat bed was another kind which was used in carrying loads as a pickup truck.

Over the years, the Volkswagen van has gone through major changes and modifications. In 1984, a new Volkswagen van was introduced and had major changes such the body shape, the boxer engine was water cooled. The van was heavier and did not have rounded edges like its predecessor; this one came in square edges. In 1990, a new model was introduced with a front engine which was water cooled and powerful. New models have been developed in 2003, 2004, 2007 and 2010 respectively. These brands are being sold in the UK, US, and Ireland among other countries worldwide.
