Variations to Recipe
There are so many ways you can change up the flavors of this dip.
Here are a few of my favorite ways to change things up!
Feel free to play around with ingredients and find what works best for you.
- Add in some taco seasoned meat to make it heartier.
- Black beans
- Pico De Gallo
- Pineapple or Mango Salsa
- Different types of shredded cheese
- Avocado Crema
- Crushed tortillas or corn chips on top
- Pair with crisp veggies for dipping
- Leave out a layer you don’t like
- Mix in chopped cilantro or even parsley for color
- Opt for vegan friendly ingredients
- Etc.
Tips For Making These Dip Cups
- Clear plastic cups are best so you can showcase the layers of the dip! It will allow you to create that beautiful presentation value.
- If you want super clean layers you can add items into piping bags to create that clean and crisp look. Or use a sandwich bag that you cut the tip off of for piping.
- Serve with a mini spoon or chips or crisp veggies so your guests can eat the dip. Even pretzels or pita chips work great for dipping.
- Make sure that the guacamole is in between two layers, this will help the guacamole from browning. If it was the top layer it would brown really easily due to the air.
- Garnish right before serving, to keep the fresh herbs vibrant and bright. Also know that if you top with fresh veggies like diced tomatoes they will begin to leak as they sit. So wait to top until right before serving.
How to Store
The 7 layer dip is perishable so it needs to be covered and stored in the fridge.
You will find after 1-2 days the veggies and such will begin to soften and start to go bad.
I do recommend eating within a couple days of being made. It is best to eat the dip the day you make it.
Tortilla chips are the traditional dipper but feel free to get creative. Pretzels, pretzel crisps, pita chips, bagel chips, vegetables, veggie straws, etc. Any item that can be dipped works great.
Go right ahead and make this a few hours to a day of when you want to serve it up. I just recommend not adding the garnish on top of each cup till right before serving. This can be green onions, shredded cheese, or even herbs.
Make sure the guacamole is between two layers in the dip. This will create a barrier and prevent the oxygen reaching the guacamole and browning it so quickly.

Notes
I kept the cups in the refrigerator for a couple of days and in my experience they are best fresh but also still good the next day.
Here are the cups I used: https://amzn.to/3Liowe1
For even more flavor, try mixing some taco seasoning into the beans or the sour cream.
To make a quick and easy guacamole for this recipe I mashed two large avocados with salt, garlic powder, and fresh squeezed lime juice to taste.
I used a Mexican blend cheese, but shredded cheddar or Colby jack work well.
