Seamheads Historical League Part 3 — American Atlantic Division

January 21, 2009 by · 5 Comments

Another day, another division preview at Seamheads.  Today’s SHL preview recaps the strongest division in the league with the American Atlantic division.

The division consists of original American League teams who started play along the Eastern seaboard.  Thanks to originally starting in Philadelphia and Washington, the Oakland Athletics(beginning as the Philadelphia Athletics in 1901 then moving to Kansas City in 1954 and finally moving to Oakland in 1968) and the Minnesota Twins(originally the Washington Senators from 1901 to 1960 before moving and becoming the Minnesota Twins in 1961) join the New York Yankees(originally the Baltimore Orioles in 1901 and 1902 before moving to New York to be the Highlanders from 1903 to 1912 and finally settling in as the Yankees in 1913) and the Boston Red Sox(known first as the Boston Americans from 1901 to 1907 before changing their name to the Red Sox in 1908).

Five Questions…

  • Will Pedro win the strikeout title?
  • Does Varitek’s ability to switch hit get him the backup catcher spot over Sammy White?
  • Will it take Jim Rice 15 years to crack this starting lineup?
  • Should there be a platoon at first or does “Big Papi” deserve the starting job outright?
  • Will simulated Manny be a head case too?

Five Questions…

  • Why does it always seem like the Twins are counted out yet still are so good?
  • How much would you pay to see Walter Johnson pitch?
  • Don’t you have to find a way to get a guy named Heinie some at bats?
  • Can there really be a wrong choice amongst the closers available for this club?
  • Can Rod Carew win the batting title?

Five Questions…

  • If Steinbrenner ran this team and they didn’t win, how much money would he spend to get better?
  • How confident would you be if you were a Yankees pitcher with this lineup?
  • Does Babe Ruth win the MVP?
  • How many players end up with 100 RBI?
  • Does simulated A-Rod fold in the playoffs, too?

Five Questions…

  • Is there a deeper pitching staff in the league?
  • Does this team “run away” with the title of fastest team?
  • Originally a catcher, does Jimmie Foxx take some time behind the plate and open up playing time for McGwire and Giambi?
  • Who should be the closer?
  • Are the historical Athletics actually better than the historical Yankees?

And how will the best division in the SHL finish?

Prediction

1. Athletics
2. Yankees (Capturing the Wild Card)3. Red Sox
4. Twins

  1. Bob R. says:

I think I would find room for Willie Randolph and Charlie Keller on the Yankee team. And I would consider Guidry over Pettitte in the rotation. That is certainly a lefty rotation in any case. Maybe Ruffing over Pennock? Actually, that would add a pretty good hitter to the lineup.

  2. Mike Lynch says:

    Bob,

The rotation the computer will be using is composed of Ruffing, Gomez, Ford, Guidry and Hunter. Righetti, Stottlemyre, and Raschi are in middle relief, Gossage and Lyle are the setup men, and Rivera is the closer.

  3. Bob R. says:

That’s really interesting. I would not have thought Hunter would be in the rotation for the Yankees. I am glad to see Guidry there and I think the relievers make a lot of sense although I wonder that it is Raschi rather than Reynolds since Allie was used in that role so often.

I wonder why the choice is Dickey over Berra since Yogi is ordinarily regarded the better player. Bill James has Berra listed as the greatest catcher of all times with Dickey at #7 for example.

I also wonder that Dahlgren is picked as an infielder over Randolph. Is it to provide a backup first baseman? If so, it seems to me Gordon could fill that role. I think Willie is by far the better player.

And of course Keller was pretty special too. I consider him a better player than Maris, and he had a longer career in NY than Maris did.

  4. Mike Lynch says:

    Bob,

Dahlgren is on the team and the 25-man active roster because his grandson Matt is running the team. Matt wanted to honor his grandfather by having him back up Gehrig in the simulation. Randolph deserves a spot on the team, but I like the idea of Matt being able to “watch” his grandfather play, even if it’s only virtual reality.

And though Dickey is listed as the starter, he’ll be splitting the playing time 50/50 with Berra. I could move Berra into the starting lineup, so it makes more sense, but they’re still going to be getting equal time (unless one of them slumps horribly).

  5. Bob R. says:

I would not even consider begrudging him the pleasure of watching his grandfather play. What fun!! Thanks for the info.
