AN ANNOTATED INDEX
TO THE NOTES
PROBE INTO
THE GREAT BASEBALL COVER‑UP
ÂÂ
For most of its first 267 issues, between March 1993 and August 2002,
Notes from the Shadows of Cooperstown was an innocent newsletter that rarely dabbled in anything remotely close to “investigative reporting.” Early on,
Notes was heavy on poetry, light fiction, humor, reviews of books and movies, a little history, some essays. It was for Everyfan — except the Rotisserie nuts, the collectors, and the stat rats.
ÂÂ
Only during the Strike of 1994-95, did
Notes take on a dark tone. But it survived those months of eclipse, and life went on. Then, inexplicably, a publication which rarely stayed on the same topic for a single issue, started focusing on a single event. An old case, “the Black Sox Scandal,” turned out to be a cold case — a mystery still ripe for the solving, a slice of American history that had gone virtually unexamined for over eight decades, perhaps because it was baseball’s darkest hour (Seymour).
ÂÂ
Darkest indeed, but not just because the ties with gambling that had been strangling baseball were finally revealed, on the national stage of a World Series — but because baseball officials had conspired to cover up the Fix of October 1919, and when it finally came undone, a year later, they buried the event as rapidly as possible, and a taboo sealed the sport’s lips.
ÂÂ
Starting in September 2002, the next hundred or more issues of
Notes were written “on the B-Sox trail” — to digging into the events of October 1919, the cover-up that followed, and the trials which put the principle players in the drama on the record. Nearly every issue, starting with #268, had at least one item related to the subject; sometimes, it took up the entire issue.
ÂÂ
Burying the Black Sox: How Baseball’s Cover-Up of the 1919 World Series Fix Almost Succeeded went to press in the summer of 2005, and was released the following March. The research never really stopped, and the book added new momentum. The appearance of the Chicago White Sox in the 2005 World Series in 2005 set in motion a bizarre chain of events that resulted in the discovery of brand new evidence, from a long-lost 1919 publication. The internet Yahoo group devoted to the “B-Sox” continued to attract new blood, yielding fresh questions and fresh contributions — more pieces of this old puzzle. Book reviews, new books and articles have raised interest in the B-Sox to a new level.
ÂÂ
Below is an Index that might serve as a guide for newcomers to the B-Sox Trail. How long it will continue to grow is anybody’s guess. The trip started with Hugh Fullerton, whose First Commandment of Sports (and Life) turned out to be the key: “Thou shalt not quit.”
 Damn good advice.
