Webster Tops Geneva; Ends Skid

Tuesday, Dave Brust’s Webster Yankees put a pair of undesirable streaks behind them.After managing just 18 hits and 2 runs in their previous three games, the pinstripes exploded for 12 hits while downing the Geneva Red Wings 9-2 in New York Collegiate Baseball League action at McDonough Field. In the process Webster gave Red Wing starter, Casey Rana (UT Permian Basin), his first loss of the season. Sean Bailey (SUNY Cortland) and Rhett Goodmiller (Central Michigan) combined for seven base knocks, and Lincoln Rassi (Toledo) struck out twelve as the Yanks ended a three-game losing streak.Bailey led the way in the first with a one-out single to right field. Dominic Catanzarite (Ball State) and Steve Muoio (Georgia C&S) followed with hits to load the bases. Matt Jacobs plated Bailey with a sacrifice fly to center.Webster added a pair in the fourth. Goodmiller’s bases loaded double brought home Muoio and Jason Edwards (Toledo). Jacobs played a role when his sacrifice bunt moved up Muoio.Webster took a 5-2 lead in the sixth when Bailey’s opposite field, bases loaded single scored Edwards and Goodmiller.  The Yanks took advantage of three walks and two errors to tack on three more in the eighth.   Kufel scored in the ninth on Goodmiller’s second double of the game.Rassi tossed six complete for team-leading fourth win of the season. The right hander from Goshen, Indiana struck out twelve, walked three, and allowed six base hits. Geneva’s two runs came in the fourth when the first three batters reached base. Chris Dudics (Toledo) brought home Dan Pembroke (Dowling) with a single through the left side. Dan Gliot (Oakland) plated Will Harford (Notre Dame) with a ground ball to right side of the infield. Rassi ended the threat with a strike out. The freshman from the University of Toledo struck out the side in the second and sixth innings.Rana entered the game with a 2-0 mark and both wins over the Yanks. The southpaw from Gilbert, Arizona had tossed two complete games allowing just one unearned run in eighteen innings pitched versus Webster. Tuesday, Rana gave up five runs (four earned) in seven innings of work.Allegany County swept a double-header from the Yanks on Sunday. Trevor Conner (Frostburg State) allowed seven hits and one earned run as the Nitros topped the Yanks in the opener, 4-2. Chris Camastro (Pace) shut out the pinstripes in the night cap, 2-0.Monday, Brian Benedictine (Benedictine College) went the distance scattering seven Yankee hits while fanning 11 as Alfred topped Webster 4-0. Since starting the season 0-6, the Oilers have gone 11-4 and have moved into fourth place in the NYCBL West Division.Webster still remains atop at 14-8.
