Webster Chews Up Brockport

It’s a dog eat dog world, and Wednesday night, Dave Brust’s Webster Yankees chewed on the Brockport Riverbats like they were Milk Bones.
Brian Pullyblank (So.Illinois) went the distance while Rhett Goodmiller (Central Michigan), Shawn Bailey (SUNY Cortland) and Matt Jacobs (UMass-Lowell) led a 16-hit attack as Webster downed Brockport, 9-1 in New York Collegiate Baseball League action.
Webster pasted runs on the board in the first four innings.
Bailey got things started for the home nine in the bottom of the first with a one-out single. Goodmiller followed with a base rap, and Nate Koontz (Ball State) plated the first run with a single to right center.
Webster used a two-out rally in the second. Chriss Soldi (UMass-Lowell) worked a base on balls. Ricky Clark (Central Michigan) kept the inning alive with a free pass. Bailey dropped a bunt inside the third baseline to load the bases. Goodmiller responded with a chop to third that allowed Bailey, going on contact, to get to second. Goodmiller’s high hop gave Brockport third baseman, Marcus Way (Harvard) no choice but to try and get the runner.
In the third, Webster worked some more two-out magic. Again, Soldi was in the middle of the play. Ollie Bertrand (Monroe CC) singled sharply to left center. When Jacobs’s slicing fly ball was mishandled in right, Bertrand advanced to third leaving two runners in scoring position. Soldi answered with a meatball down the right field line giving the pinstripes a 4-1 lead.
The Yankees blew the game open with three runs in the fourth. Bertrand’s single to center scored Goodmiller. Jacobs brought home Bertrand and Steve Muoio (Georgia C&S) with an opposite field single.
Goodmiller and Muoio finished the scoring in the sixth. Bertrand singled home Goodmiller and Jacobs plated Muoio.
Bailey, Goodmiller, and Jacobs each finished with three hits on the night. Jacobs added three RBI and Goodmiller crossed the plate twice and added an RBI.
With a recent rash of injuries, Goodmiller has proven himself to be invaluable as he has moved in to play second for the home nine.
“He’s blue collar type of player,†said Brust. “He’s one of our leaders.â€
Up until last week Goodmiller logged his time at catcher. Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â
Pullyblank improved to 3-1 on the season with second complete game of the campaign. The ‘Caledonia Kid’ struck out eight and walked one while scattering hits. On June 19 th , Pullyblank tossed a no-hitter when Webster trimmed Niagara 1-0.
Brockport’s lone came in the third. Khyle Dimino (SUNY Cortland) roped an inside-the-park home run to right center for the tally.
Webster travels to Niagara, Friday, for a duel with the Power before returning home for a double-header with first-place Hornell, Saturday. It’s ‘bring your dog to the park’ day on Saturday. So grab your pooch and make a day of it.
