Live From Spring Training ’10: Blue Jays Vs. Astros

In a game played primarily by backup players and minor leaguers, the Houston Astros defeated the Toronto Blue Jays, 2-0, Friday afternoon in Kissimmee. The Astros scored one run in the first inning on a leadoff triple by Jason Bourgeois and a groundout by Jeff Keppinger and another in the second inning on a wind-aided home run by former Rockie, Cory Sullivan. That was all the scoring as starter Josh Banks and six relievers never allowed the Blue Jays more than one baserunner in an inning. However, Randy Ruiz and John McDonald backed Astro leftfielder, Jason Michaels to the wall to haul in long drives off of Banks that were knocked down by the wind.The most impressive performance was turned in by Astros right-handed sidearmer, Sammy Gervacio, who struck out three left-handed batters in the seventh inning. Roy Corcoran worked the ninth inning to get credited with a save.

The Blue Jays outhit the Astros 6-5 with Jeremy Reed and Sean Ochinko, a member of LSU’s College World Champions in 2009, the only players with 2 hits.

Most of the regulars should be back in action Saturday for the Astros with the Yankees coming to Kissimmee followed by the Mets on Sunday and the Cardinals on Monday. Brett Myers is scheduled to start against the Yankees.
