Touring The Bases With…Randy Jones

Former major league hurler Randy Jones spent only 10 years in the bigs and lost more games than he won, going 100-123 for the San Diego Padres and New York Mets, but for two magical seasons, he was among the best pitchers in the game. After leading the National League in losses with 22 in 1974, he rebounded in 1975 and went 20-12 with a league-leading 2.24 ERA, and finished second in Cy Young voting behind Tom Seaver.
Undaunted, Jones went 22-14 in 1976 with a 2.74 ERA and led the senior circuit in wins, starts, complete games, innings, batters faced, and WHIP.  This time Jones won the Cy Young Award, beating Met southpaw Jerry Koosman, and was named N.L. Pitcher of the Year by The Sporting News .  But his success was short-lived; he severed a nerve in his pitching elbow late in the ’76 season and because the injury couldn’t be repaired, Jones was never the same. He retired from the majors in 1982.
