Touring The Bases With…Rico Petrocelli

Rico Petrocelli was signed as an amateur free agent by the Boston Red Sox in 1961 and went on to have a productive 13-year big league career, all with Boston. After a cup of coffee with the Sox in 1963, Petrocelli arrived in the big leagues to stay in 1965, and by 1969 was one of the best hitting shortstops in the majors. He belted 40 homers in ’69, becoming the first A.L. shortstop to accomplish the feat, then followed that up with 29- and 28-homer seasons in 1970 and ’71 and became one of the top 20 hitters in all of baseball. He was named to the A.L. All-Star team twice, belted three homers in 58 postseason at-bats, hit .308 in the 1975 World Series and finished his career with 210 home runs.
