Meet Kate Wedge the wife of Mariners Skipper Eric Wedge

While much has been written about the great job that manager Eric Wedge has done this year with the Seattle Mariners, not much has been said about the skipper’s wife, Kate Wedge. I was fortunate enough to meet her last night through a mutual friend as I was enjoying the last few innings of the 4-2 win over the Phillies. Kate Wedge was busy raising money for the Mariners Carecharity selling autographed balls from the players along with several other of the Mariners wives and girlfriends. I was struck right away with her humility and “Down to earth” attitude but could also tell, like her husband, she has goals and is motivated to do some good work for the community.

Kate Wedge hails from Buffalo and I let her know we the fans here in Seattle were so appreciative that she and Eric have come here. If you were to meet her at Cosco in Edmonds you might at first just think she was another average Mom taking care of a household. But I get the feeling that Kate Wedge is a bit more driven than that and she was buzzing around as if all 35,000 of us were at a party that she was hosting and needed to keep  us all happy and on the ball. She is definitely a delight and I urge everyone to get onboard with the Mariners Care program and whatever else Kate and her team get behind as they work behind the scenes helping to build community spirit.

Of course I had to ask her about my new “ Eric Wedge Mustache” to see if I would make the starting lineup and she let me know it was a good start but I needed to let it grow down a little longer and wider at the bottom! True story I actually had my mustache critiqued by Eric Wedge’s wife at Safeco Field….

I also got to meet Jack Cust’s wife, Jennifer Cust, and chatted briefly with Carlos Peguero’s girlfriend, Jackie. Both of these ladies seemed happy to be here and quite positive themselves. I gave them a few tips on Seattle life and mentioned they should all be in a float for Seafair this year which lit up their eyes, though they were sort of vague on the whole Seafair thing and actually were not sure if it ever really got sunny here!

This season we have not only been fortunate enough to have a skipper that is helping restore the  pride in our team, but a group of fun and energetic women behind the scenes working to help build community for our city. The Baseball Gods and Dave Niehaus are smiling on those of us who didn’t give up five minutes before the miracle. Go M’s! http://jeffsmariners.com
