Un lanzador caraqueño: Alejandro “Patón†Carrasquel fue el que inició la senda de los venezolanos en las Grandes Ligas, al debutar el 23 de abril de 1939 con los Senadores de Washington.
Empezó contra los Yankees de Nueva York al reemplazar a Ken Chases en la cuarta entrada.
Retiró, luego de dos outs, al legendario Joe DiMaggio con rolling al pitcher.
La primera victoria la obtuvo el 3 de mayo de 1939 al vencer a los Carmelitas de San Luis 11-10. Trabajó durante dos entradas, permitió un hit y un boleto. Actuó como relevista.
Su mejor temporada fue en 1943 cuando ganó 11 y perdió 7 ayudando a su equipo a alcanzar el segundo lugar en la Liga Americana. Dejó una efectividad de 2,71 en 1945, que fue la tercera mejor de los Senadores y la duodécima de la liga.
El 2 de Enero de 1946, el “Patón†junto con el jardinero Fred Vaughn pasaron a los Medias Blancas de Chicago.
Estuvo ocho temporadas, siete con Washington y una con Chicago. Ganó 50 y perdió 39 con una efectividad de 3,73. Su mejor año fue en 1943 que gano 11 y perdió 7, como relevista gano 26, perdió 15 y salvo 16, todos con Washington.
Antes de estrenarse en las mayores, “Patónâ€jugó con equipos como el Concordia, Royal Criollos, Pastora, también participó en Cuba, Republica Dominicana y Puerto Rico.
En Venezuela, Carrasquel comenzó en 1946 con Navegantes del Magallanes.
