MLB Draft Pick Heyman signs with the Geneva Red Wings

Looking to bolster their lineup for the stretch run, the Geneva Red Wings of the New York Collegiate Baseball League signed MLB draft pick, Grant Heyman.
The Toronto Blue Jays chose Heyman out of high school in the 11th round with 355th overall pick of the 2012 draft.
The Pittsford, New York resident opted to attend college in the fall. Heyman will play for the University of Miami Hurricanes of the Atlantic Coast Conference.
A recent change in the NYCBL eligibility rules allows Heyman to play right away. Prior to last season only current NCAA student-athletes with one year of experience playing in college and at least one year of eligibility remaining could participate in the NYCBL and other NACSB-sanctioned leagues.
Heyman has played seven games for the Red Wings. He hit his first career home run in the NYCBL on Friday July 6th, a 17-3 Geneva victory over Sherrill. Two days later, the 6-foot-4 Heyman connected on a pinch-hit single in Geneva’s loss to Adirondack.
“I think we’re really going to have a good second half,” Geneva manager Dave Herbst said recently.
Heyman joins Lake Ontario’s Brennan Henry as the two current NYCBL players taken in the MLB Draft. The Philadelphia Phillies chose Henry in the 25th round with the 788th overall pick. Henry chose to return to school and recently started playing with the Ridgemen.
Chris Bostick was the first player granted eligibility under the amendment to league rules. Bostick played for the Webster Yankees in 2011. The Aquinas Institute graduate was taken by the Oakland A’s in the 44th round of the 2011 MLB Draft. Bostick currently plays with the Vermont Lake Monsters of the Class A New York-Penn League.
Geneva’s next home game is Saturday night against those same Sherrill Silversmiths. A 7 p.m. first pitch is scheduled at McDonough Park.
