El juego inolvidable de Armando Ortíz. Tres plomazos en el plato. (The game Armando Ortíz would never forget.)

Parece un cuento fantasioso, el caso es que hubo una época cuando los juegos dominicales dela Ligade Béisbol Profesional de Venezuela empezaban a las once de la mañana, al menos en Caracas, Maracaibo y Barquisimeto. Y más allá en el tiempo se jugaba los 24 y 31 de diciembre. En la actualidad muchos se quejarían porque a esa hora y en esos días todavía duermen. Aquellos tiempos encontraban a todo el mundo despierto hace rato. Habían ido al mercado y venían emocionados a escuchar el juego o se iban al estadio. Esta historia comienza la mañana del domingo 31 de diciembre de 1967. Diego Seguí por los Leones del Caracas. Tom Fisher por los Navegantes del Magallanes. Dadas las rutas que transitaba cada equipo, el análisis inicial del encuentro indicaba que el Caracas debía imponerse con relativa facilidad.

Fisher tenía marca de 2-6 y efectividad de 4.06 con los Tiburones deLa Guaira.Seguíhabía ganado sus primeras 8 decisiones.

Magallanes atravesaba una temporada para el olvido, sin embargo sus aficionados seguían asistiendo con fidelidad al estadio. La noche anterior había vencido a Cardenales de Lara, uno de los equipo en lucha por la clasificación. Los magallaneros subieron el volumen de la sirena en el segundo inning. Oswaldo Blanco despachó un doblete entre left y center field. Armando Ortíz siguió con lineazo a lo más profundo del jardín central para apuntarse un triple. Magallanes 1 – Caracas 0. Tanto saltaban los aficionados por la tribuna derecha que parecía que hubiese llegado San Nicolás.

La respuesta caraquista llegó en la apertura del tercer episodio. Luego de un out, Victor Davalillo bateó un fácil elevado a manos de Leo Posada en el centerfield, este perdió la pelota y Davalillo llegó a la intermedia.

De la tribuna izquierda empezaban a sonar cánticos de paliza y amenazas de quemar el barco. Musulungo Herrera adelantó a Davalillo con rodado por segunda base. José Tartabull despachó incogible a la izquierda que trajo el empate en los ganchos de Davalillo. Allí empezó el forcejeo que mantuvo en ascuas los gritos de una tribuna y la otra.

En el segundo episodio Paul Schaal corría en tercera base con un out. César Tovar conectó elevado entre right y center field. Todo hacía pensar que los Leones picarían adelante. Armando Ortíz se desplazó hacia su derecha, luego de atrapar la esférica, palanqueó y metió un strike de aire en la mascota de Ed Herrmann. Armando Rodríguez levantó el puño derecho para decretar el dobleplay. Fischer levantó la mano hacía el jardín central mientras corría hacia el dugout.

Ortíz había llegado a los Navegantes a principio de diciembre de 1967 en un cambio con los Tiburones deLa Guairapor el lanzador Aurelio Monteagudo. Desde entonces se propuso demostrarles a los escualos que se habían equivocado con él.

En el quinto episodio Teodoro Obregón corría en segunda base, quiso aprovechar un sencillo de Musulungo Herrera para venirse a la goma. Ortíz activó su brazalete y metió otro misil en la mascota de Herrmann. Lo esperaron, Obregón tuvo que levantar las manos.

Muchos hablan del primer juego de Magallanes enla Seriedel Caribe de 1970 como el juego más importante de Armando Ortíz en la liga venezolana, aún resuena aquel jonrón ante el Cy Young dela LigaAmericana(1969), Miguel Cuellar. Al conocer los detalles de este juego, se sabe porque el 31 de diciembre de 1967 es el juego que Ortíz nunca olvidaría.

En el sexto episodio Nelson Castellanos corría en tercera cuando Teodoro Obregón despachó otro elevado al jardín central, Ortíz atrapó la pelota y pintó otro strike en la mascota de Herrmann para reventar a Castellanos en el plato con la marca de otro dobleplay. Todo el respaldo defensivo de Ortíz inspiró a Fisher sobre el montículo para seguir dominando los bates caraquistas.

Para redondear un día especial, Armando Ortíz se la desapareció a Diego Seguí en el séptimo episodio para poner a ganar al Magallanes 2-1. El sueño fantástico se había completado, el equipo débil del fondo de la tabla derrotaba a los poderosos Leones. los magallaneros tenían un regalo invalorable de fin de año.

Para el momento aquellos tres outs en la goma  significaron un record en la liga venezolana y empató la marca de asistencias para un jardinero que hasta ese momento ostentaba Roberto Moronta desde el 17 de febrero de 1946.

It seems a fantasy tale. The point is that there was a time when Sunday games in the Venezuelan winter league started at 11 inthe morning, at least in Caracas, Maracaiboand Barquisimeto. And beyond in the past there were games on December 24 ^th and 31 ^st . Nowadays many people would complain because the still sleep at that time. In those times most of people were out from bed by 9:00 a.m. They had gone to the grocery market and came back excited about listening the ballgame or going to the stadium. This story begins the morning of December 31 ^st , 1967. Diego Seguí is the startying pitcher for the Caracas Lions. Tom Fisher for the Magallanes Navigators. Due to the positions of the teams in the standing, the analysis before the game showed that theCaracas team should win easily.

Fisher had a 2-6 record and an ERA of 4.06 with theLa GuairaSharks.Seguí had won his first 8 decisions.

Magallanes had a horrible season, no matter the fans kept going to the ballpark to root for the team. The night before Magallanes had a victory over the Lara Cardinals, one of the teams fighting for a berth in the play offs. In the second frame Oswaldo Blanco hit a two-base hit between left and center field. Then Armando Ortíz hit a line drive to deep center field to plate in Blanco with a triple. Magallanes 1 -Caracas0. The Magallanes fans jumped so much that it seemed Santa Claus had arrived to the stadium.

TheCaracasanswer came in the top of the third frame. After one out, Victor Davalillo hit an easy pop up to Leo Posada in center field. He lost the ball and Davalillo arrived to second base.

The Caracas Lions fans began to shout predicting their team was going to beat Magallanes. Musulungo Herrera hit a grounder to second base. Davalillo landed on third base. José Tartabul hit a single to left field to tie the game in Davalillo’s spikes. There it started the fight between the shouts of the two rival fans.

In the second frame, Paul Schaal ran in third base with one out. César Tovar hit a pop up between righ and center field. It seemed the Lions would score the first run in the game. Armando Ortíz ran nto his right, after catching the ball, he made a magnificent throw to Ed Herrmann’s mitt. The umpire Armando Rodríguez raised his right fist to call the dobleplay. Fisher aimed his hand to center field while running to the dugout.

Ortíz had arrived to the Navigators at the beginning of December1967, ina transaction with theLa GuairaSharksfor the pitcher Aurelio Monteagudo. Since then he made an honor point showing the Sharks they had made the wrong transaction.

In the fifth frame Teodoro Obregón ran at second base, he tried to score on a single by Musulungo Herrera. Ortíz activated his arm and threw another missil to Herrmann’s mitt. Obregón had to raise his arms, out at home.

In the sixth inning Nelson Castellanos ran in third base when Teodoro Obregón hit another pop up to center field. Ortiz caught the ball and pictured another strike in Herrmann’s mitt to retire Castellanos at home. This defensive support by Ortíz inspired Fisher to keep dominating the Caracas Lions line up.

To complete a special day, Armando Ortíz hit a dinger against Seguí in the seventh frame to put Magallanes up 2-1. The fantasticd dram had took place, the weak team in the bottom of the standing defeated the powerful Lions. The Magallanes fans had a very valuable end of the year gift.

By that moment, those three outs at home plate meant a record for the venezuelan winter league and tied the assists record for an outfielder held by Roberto Moronta since February 17 ^th , 1946.
