Baseball Birthplaces and the Retro World Baseball Classic
July 23, 2017 by Derek Bain · Leave a Comment
Upon the conclusion of the 2017 World Baseball Classic (the fourth iteration of the tournament which began in 2006), I started to wonder how the rosters would have looked in previous years. Using stricter rules for roster construction (basing all rosters on birthplace alone, 20-year periods between tournaments and additional stipulations outlined in the Methodology section below), I assembled regional teams and organized the players and lineups. The complete set of Retro WBC rosters along with every ballplayer listed by birthplace (grouped by cities and states/countries) can be found here: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1ZS1FywxCTsznmxtqvYVRFhWREZegNQZmYOZq9v5jKHQ/pubhtml
Methodology
I imported the Master file from the 2016 Sean Lahman Baseball database into RStudio. I assigned a “DebutDecade” to each player based on their MLB debut date and merged the resulting table with Win Shares and WAR data acquired from the Baseball Gauge @ Seamheads. I sorted the players by birthplace, debut date and highest single-season Win Shares totals to create three sets of rosters:
- Retro World Baseball Classic
- Ballplayers by Birthplaces – Cities
- Ballplayers by Birthplaces – States or Countries
The Retro World Baseball Classic rosters are compiled using the following rules:
- Teams are broken into regions (states, countries or groups thereof)
- Regions must have at least 40 players (there are several exceptions)
- States with more than 100 players in any selected group are granted team status
- Rosters are grouped by “DebutDecade” as defined below
- I have added a number of Negro League and Japanese League players to rosters. However, WAR and/or Win Shares totals are absent from the calculations.
Terminology
DebutDecade– grouping of ballplayers based on their Major League debut date. All players making their debut from 1871 through 1900 receive the “1900” DebutDecade designation. After 1900, players are arranged in groups of twenty seasons. Thus, players making their MLB debut from 1901-1920 are classified as “1920”, 1921-1940 are listed as “1940”, etc. up to “2020” which covers 2001-2016. As defined by Baseball-Reference.com Bullpen: WAR– Wins Above Replacement “a total-player-value statistic … (which) attempts to measure a player’s value – expressed in wins – over that which would have been contributed by a fictional ‘replacement-level player’ (essentially a AAA-quality player who can be readily acquired by a team at any time for the league’s minimum salary) in the same amount of playing time.” WS– Win Shares “calculated using the formula in the book Win Shares by Bill James. The statistic is meant to assess a player’s value in terms of his ability to help his team win games.”

Best of the Retro WBC
The leaderboards for the Retro World Baseball Classic rosters are based on the single-season Win Shares totals for the top forty players on each squad. The “1900” teams dominate the charts primarily due to pitching usage along with a variety of rules changes prior to the Modern Era. In the early years, the idea of a pitching rotation did not exist and pitchers were not allowed to throw overhand. This allowed teams to carry one pitcher on their roster and in many instances, this individual started every game. Pitchers accrued extremely high innings totals as compared to today’s hurlers. As such, Win Shares totals for aces in the late 1800’s can easily exceed 50+. So it is necessary to adjust for those factors when making player and team comparisons across eras. There are two charts below. The “Team Total Win Shares” chart simply lists every Retro WBC squad in descending order from highest to lowest team total Win Shares based on the top single-season totals on their 40-man roster. The “Debut Decade” chart groups the teams by their DebutDecade (1900, 1920, 1940, etc.) sorted by team total Win Shares.
1900 Pennsylvania
Honus Wagner (.354/10/109) paced the Senior Circuit in virtually every major offensive category including WAR (13) and Win Shares (56.7) in 1908. “The Flying Dutchman” collected his sixth batting title and topped the leaderboards in base hits (201), doubles (39), triples (19), RBI, stolen bases (53), OBP (.415), SLG (.542) and total bases (308). In the Union Association’s lone season of existence (1884), Fred Dunlap delivered a .412 BA, swatted 13 big-flies and registered 160 tallies. Guy Hecker (52-20, 1.80 in 1884), George “Grin” Bradley (45-19, 1.23), Jim A. Devlin (35-25, 2.25), John “Monte” Ward (39-24, 1.74) and Matt Kilroy (46-19, 3.07) all recorded at least 50 Win Shares in their elite seasons.

2000 California
Twenty offensive players on the top California crew achieved 30+ Win Shares in their definitive seasons. Seven-time NL MVP Barry Bonds (.328/73/137) established the single-season home run record in 2001, surpassing teammate Mark McGwire’s total of 70 from the 1998 campaign. Randy D. Johnson (24-5, 2.32) notched his fourth consecutive Cy Young award in 2002. The “Big Unit” supplied 20 wins and 354 strikeouts per year with a 2.48 ERA during that stretch.

1960 South
The Southern outfield trio of Mickey Mantle, Willie Mays and Hank Aaron eclipsed 40 Win Shares in their finest seasons. “The Mick” claimed back-to-back AL MVP honors in 1956-57, earning the Triple Crown in ’56 and posting career-highs in batting average (.365) and bases on balls (146) in the subsequent campaign. The “Say Hey Kid” collected 12 consecutive Gold Glove awards (1957-1968) and merited 1965 NL MVP honors with 52 four-baggers, a .398 OBP and .645 SLG. “Hammerin’ Hank” entered the 30/30 club in 1963, leading the circuit with 44 long balls, 130 ribbies, 121 runs and a .586 SLG while pilfering 31 bases in 36 tries. Willie “Stretch” McCovey (.320/45/126) captured 1969 NL MVP honors and sixteen-time Gold Glove third-sacker Brooks Robinson (.317/28/118) secured the 1964 AL MVP award. The USA South region consists of Alabama, Arkansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Oklahoma and Tennessee (Texas would have been included geographically, however it has enough players to field its own team).

1900 Northeast
The smallest of the 50 United States, Rhode Island is home to the top two batsmen on the 1900 Northeast squad. Nap Lajoie (.384/4/76) notched his fifth batting championship, pacing the American League in base hits (227), doubles (51) and total bases (304) in 1910. “Sir” Hugh Duffy (.440/18/145) manhandled the opposition in 1894, leading the Senior Circuit in batting average, base hits (237), doubles (51), home runs, and total bases (374). Roger Connor paced the NL in batting average (.371), OBP (.435) and safeties during the 1885 season. “Sliding” Billy Hamilton tied his personal-best with 111 stolen bases and lit up the competition for a .340 BA with 141 aces, 179 base knocks, 102 bases on balls and a .453 OBP (all League-bests) in 1891. “Wild” Bill Hutchinson completed 188 of 194 starts over a three-year period (1890-92) in which he averaged 40 victories with an ERA of 2.76. The USA Northeast region encompasses Connecticut, Maine, New Hampshire, New Jersey and Rhode Island (Massachusetts and New York fielded their own teams).

Benny Kauff (.370/8/95) surfaced in the Federal League in 1914 following a “cup of coffee” with the Yankees two years prior. He claimed the batting crown in successive seasons and paced the fledgling circuit in hits (211), runs (120), doubles (44), stolen bases (75) and OBP (.447) during the ’14 season. “Gorgeous” George Sisler (.407/19/122) seized his first batting crown and established the MLB record for base hits in a single-season (257) in 1920. Ichiro Suzuki eclipsed Sisler’s mark with 262 safeties in 2004.

Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
Old-time hurlers dominate the Philadelphia pitching staff with 1939 NL MVP Bucky Walters (27-11, 2.29) as the lone post-1900 starter to make the cut. With the exception of outfielder Bobby Higginson, the careers of every ballplayer on the 25-man roster ended prior to the Expansion Era. 1953 NL MVP Roy Campanella (.312/41/142) bats cleanup for “The City of Brotherly Love”.

In stark contrast to the primordial Philadelphia squad, the “City of Angels” contingent skews heavily toward the present-day with only 4 of the players on the 25-man roster completing their careers prior to the Expansion Era. No Cy Young award-winners in this bunch but the offense is stacked with all-around talent including 8-time batting champion Tony Gwynn, Duke Snider (.341/40/130 in 1954), “Steady” Eddie Murray and 1988 NL home run leader Darryl Strawberry. The bench offers plenty of speed (Brett Butler, Mitchell Page, Bobby Tolan), power (Cecil Fielder) along with the dual threat posed by Eric “The Red” Davis.

New York, New York
“The Big Apple” amalgamated five boroughs (Bronx, Brooklyn, Manhattan, Queens and Staten Island) into one city in 1898. With the exception of Manhattan, the other boroughs are represented separately in the “birth city” section of the Lahman database. As such, the New York, New York roster is denoted here. All but Queens register on the “Top 200” birthplace chart. 1927 AL MVP Lou Gehrig (.373/47/173) leads a splendid cast which includes fellow MVP’s Hank Greenberg (1935 AL) and Alex Rodriguez (2005 AL). Jack Lynch (37-15, 2.67 for the 1884 Metropolitans) and 1975 AL Cy Young award-winner Jim Palmer (23-11, 2.09) anchor the starting staff.

Charlie Sweeney amassed 41 victories in 1884 in 60 contests (56 starts) while fashioning an ERA of 1.70 and a superb WHIP (0.817). Mike Norris (22-9, 2.53) placed second in the 1980 AL Cy Young balloting. “The City by the Bay” incorporates a dynamic starting nine highlighted by 1985 NL MVP Willie McGee (.353/10/82) and the runner-up in the 1929 NL MVP race, Lefty O’Doul (.398/32/122). “Diamond” Jim Gentile (.302/46/141) leads a potent bench along with 1941 NL MVP Dolph Camilli (.285/34/120).

Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic
The first of seven entries for the Dominican Republic on the birthplace chart, Santo Domingo posts the highest score for any non-U.S. city. Albert Pujols (.327/47/135) claimed his third MVP trophy in 2009. Including “The Machine”, six batsmen clubbed 40 or more circuit clouts in their peak seasons – Jose A. Bautista, Adrian Beltre, David Ortiz, Carlos Pena and Manny Ramirez. Ramon J. Martinez (20-6, 2.92) earned his lone All-Star invite and placed runner-up in the 1990 NL Cy Young vote.

“Prince” Hal Newhouser averaged 27 wins with a 1.99 ERA over a three-year period (1944-1946), earning back-to-back AL MVP awards along with a runner-up finish in ’46. Ed Reulbach (18-14, 1.42) completed 28 of 29 starts in his inaugural season and established career-bests in ERA and WHIP (0.963). The “Motor City” mound mastery relegates both 1996 Cy Young winners (Pat Hentgen and John Smoltz) to the bullpen. Bill Freehan (.263/25/84) placed second in the 1968 AL MVP balloting and set personal-bests in runs scored, home runs and RBI. Seven years later, slugging first-sacker John Mayberry (.291/34/106) topped the circuit in walks (119) and established career-highs in almost every offensive category.

Baseball-Reference Seamheads – Baseball Gauge Sean Lahman Baseball Archive
About the Author
I am a New Jersey native with a passion for baseball, statistics, computers and video games who enjoys spending quality time with his family.
“Hardball Retrospective”is available in paperback and digital ( Kindle ) format at Amazon.com. Supplemental Statistics, Charts and Graphs along with a discussion forum are offered at TuataraSoftware.com .
Don Daglow (Intellivision World Series Major League Baseball, Earl Weaver Baseball, Tony LaRussa Baseball) contributed the foreword for Hardball Retrospective. The foreword and preview of my book are accessible here .
“Hardball Retrospective – Addendum 2014 to 2016”supplements my research for Hardball Retrospective, providing retroactive standings based on Wins Above Replacement (WAR) and Win Shares (WS) for each “original” team over the past three seasons (2014-2016). Team totals from 2010 – 2013 are included for reference purposes. “Addendum” is available in paperback and digital ( Kindle ) format at Amazon.com.
“ Hardball Retroactive”,published in June 2018, is available in paperback and digital ( Kindle ) format at Amazon.com. A cross-section of essays that I penned for Seamheads.com along with my Baseball Analytics blog spanning nearly a decade touching on subjects including “Taking the Extra Base”, “General Manager Scorecard”, “Worst Trades”, “BABIP By Location” and “Baseball Birthplaces and the Retro World Baseball Classic”. Rediscover your favorite hardball arcade and simulations in “Play Retro Baseball Video Games In Your Browser” or take a deep dive into every franchise’s minor league successes and failures in relation to their major league operations in “Minors vs. Majors”.
“Hardball Architects”examines the trades, free agent acquisitions, draft picks and other transactions for the 30 Major League Baseball franchises, divided into a 2-volume set (American League and National League). All key moves are scrutinized for every team and Sabermetric principles are applied to the roster construction throughout the lifetime of the organization to encapsulate the hits and misses by front office executives. “Volume 1 – American League Teams” is available in paperback and digital ( Kindle ) format at Amazon.com. “Volume 2 – National League Teams” is tentatively scheduled for publication in the spring of 2022.
