Wednesday, May 9th – It’s the Kansas City Monarchs vs. St. Louis Stars, for the 5th and final game of their series at Stars Park St. Louis. The Stars have won 3 of the first 4 games.

Stars 1B Mule Suttles was spiked by Frank Duncan on Tuesday, and is out of the lineup. The Stars also made some roster moves. Due to the NNL 16 player limit, St. Louis releases 22-year-old P/1B Clem Turner. The Stars also move 32-year-old catcher Mitchell Murray to coach, and sign 19-year-old catcher Clarence “Spoony” Palm, who had been a rookie with Birmingham in 1927. Murray would soon be signed by Chicago and continue his career through 1932.

Chet Brewer is another young yet experienced Monarch pitcher, only 21 years old but in his fourth season with Kansas City. He will still be pitching in his mid-forties. Luther McDonald is 22, and went 13-4 for St. Louis in his rookie season of 1927.

Once again, after Leroy Taylor the Monarchs scores a first inning run, driven in by Newt Allen, the Stars start even faster, with a leadoff triple by Cool Papa Bell, Branch Russell reaching on a hit by pitch, and Willie Wells hitting a 3 run home run over the car barn.

After another Monarch run in the 5th cuts the lead to 3-2, the Stars score two more in the bottom of the inning, Bell and Wells driven in by Dewey Creacy and Wilson Redus, making the score 5-2 Stars.

In the bottom of the 8th, Clarence Palm singled, Luther McDonald walked, and then Cool Papa Bell hit a home run, upping the lead to 8-2. Kansas City scores 2 in the ninth, but it’s not enough, and the Stars win 8-4.

NOTES: Luther McDonald gives up 4 runs (2 earned), 8 hits, 1 walk with 1 strikeout. Chet Brewer also pitches a complete game, as the Kansas City pitching staff has been beat up by the Stars. In Brewer’s 8 innings he allowed 11 hits, 7 earned runs, 9 strikeouts and 3 walks.  Cool Papa Bell goes 3-4 with a triple, a home run, a walk, 3 runs scored, and 3 RBI.

Other NNL Scores:
No other league games scheduled.
