Friday, May 11th – In a battle of the league’s southern teams, the Birmingham Black Barons visit the Memphis Red Sox at Lewis Field.

32-year-old Harry Salmon, who was 15-6 with a 2.93 ERA in 1927, opposes 22-year-old strikeout pitcher Steel Arm Tyler.

Memphis jumps out front with 2 runs in the 1st inning, highlighted by a Bob Miller triple. Birmingham scores 1 run in the 2nd, but otherwise Steel Arm Tyler has them shut down, striking out the side in the top of the 4th inning. After Memphis increases their lead to 3-1 with a run in the 6th, Tyler comes up with arm issues, and is relieved by Cliff Bell.

After another run in the 7th for Memphis, Birmingham breaks through against Bell with 1 in the 8th to make the score 4-2 Memphis. The Red Sox then put 4 on the board in the bottom of the 8th, and two runs for Birmingham are not enough. Memphis prevails 8-4.

NOTES: In his 6 innings, Steel Arm Tyler gave up no earned runs, 6 hits, striking out 5 and walking 1. Harry Salmon was hit hard in 7 2/3rds innings, giving up 8 runs and 18 hits. Ruby Miller, Kid Lowe, and Larry Brown all had 3 hits for Memphis. Ray Sheppard went 4-5 with a double and 2 RBI for Birmingham.
