Wednesday, May 23rd – The Cleveland Tigers are visiting the Birmingham Black Barons at “The Wood” (Rickwood Field) for a double header. Birmingham won game #1 9-1. As is common in the Negro Leagues, the second game is scheduled for 7 innings.

Cleveland sends their #1 pitcher, 29-year-old Nelson Dean, against Birmingham’s 21-year-old sensation, Satchel Paige.

Birmingham scores 3 runs in 3 innings against Dean, who switches positions in the 4th with RF Heavy Johnson. Johnson manages to hold Birmingham scoreless the rest of the way.

On other side, Paige is being Paige. In his complete game 7 innings, he gives up 1 run (0 Earned), 5 hits, 1 walk, and strikes out 8. Birmingham wins 3-1, sweeping the double-header from Cleveland.

NOTES: Geechie Meredith goes 2-3 with 3 runs scored. Ray Sheppard is 2 for 3 with a triple and 1 RBI.
