Still Just Spring Training
March 6, 2010 by Daniel Shoptaw · Leave a Comment
At least there was a reason. Brad Penny was one of the most intriguing names brought into St. Louis during the offseason. A lot of us were interested to see what this guy, who had been a very successful pitcher in the past, could do with Dave Duncan’s tutelage. So seeing the results yesterday would […]
Stumbling Out of the Gate
March 5, 2010 by Daniel Shoptaw · Leave a Comment
Well, that wasn’t the way Cardinal fans wanted to see things get started. OK, let’s put in the usual disclaimers. Â It was a spring training game. Â Most of the regulars weren’t in there, and you can’t take a lot away from one game, especially the first of the year. Â So I’m not drawing any conclusions […]
Let’s Play Some Ball
March 4, 2010 by Daniel Shoptaw · Leave a Comment
I check the weather forecast and it’s supposed to be in the sixties this weekend. Â I can see the sun coming up earlier and earlier and staying up later and later. Â Those might be signs, but the real indicator that spring is returning comes today, as the Cardinals take on another MLB team. Â Baseball games […]
It’s Like Being There
February 25, 2010 by Daniel Shoptaw · Leave a Comment
Maybe it’s just me, but with the coverage we are getting from Jupiter, it’s almost like being there. After a session reading all this stuff in front of my computer, I’m bitterly disappointed to go outside to 30 degree weather. Let’s bring on the spring already! Last night Andrew from Pitchers Hit Eighth and I […]
Cardinals Getting Ready
February 22, 2010 by Daniel Shoptaw · Leave a Comment
Before we get to the news of the weekend, it’s just come across Twitter that the Cards have invited Shelby Miller and Sam Freeman into camp. While it’s most likely to make sure they have enough arms for whatever drills and situations that they have in mind, it’s still interesting to see Miller get a […]
Starting the Routine
February 19, 2010 by Daniel Shoptaw · Leave a Comment
Things are starting to get established down in Jupiter. Yesterday, it was Tony LaRussa’s time in front of the media. You can hear some of his remarks here. A lot of what you’d expect out of TLR, a lot of working hard, have a chance to compete, etc. Tony’s not likely to tip his hand […]
Talk and Action
February 18, 2010 by Daniel Shoptaw · Leave a Comment
As everyone knows by now, the pitchers, the catchers and other assorted players and Cardinal brass showed up in Jupiter yesterday. The hitting coach dwarfed them all. Mark McGwire came to camp yesterday and, as he often does, stole the spotlight. This time, in my mind, it was in a positive way, as he talked […]
Those Sweet Words

What did you say? I know what you were singing But my ears won’t stop ringing Long enough to hear Those sweet words And your simple melody I just have to hear Those sweet words Spoken like a melody I just want to hear Those sweet words –Norah Jones, “Those Sweet Words“, Feels Like Home […]
One Day Away
February 16, 2010 by Daniel Shoptaw · Leave a Comment
Pitchers and catchers “officially” report tomorrow. In actuality, almost the entire team is already in Jupiter or doing prep work before getting there. Still, sitting here with 19 degree temperatures outside this morning, waking up to read about spring training is just about glorious. There’s magic in “pitchers and catchers report.” I believe that Brad […]
The Week We’ve Been Waiting For
February 15, 2010 by Daniel Shoptaw · Leave a Comment
As people continue to deal with snow, ice, and arctic temperatures, a nation’s eyes turn to the states of Florida and Arizona, desperate for relief and for the magical words of “Play ball!” It is that time of year again, thankfully, when the baseball news starts flowing and the excitement starts building. The scribes are […]
The Lost Cardinal Titles
February 12, 2010 by Daniel Shoptaw · Leave a Comment
This week on Lost, we saw the initial aftereffects of what happened when the H-bomb exploded and, at least in part, reset the timeline from the plane crash on September 22, 2004. (If you aren’t a Lost follower, one, why not and two, don’t worry, you can still read this post.) Since 2004 has a […]
Holliday Season

So, will it be the most wonderful time of the year or will St. Louis have a blue Christmas?
Cardinal Off-The-Field News
December 14, 2009 by Daniel Shoptaw · Leave a Comment
A couple of things took place this weekend. One was at least semi-hopeful, one fairly disappointing.
Winter Meeting Wrapup
December 11, 2009 by Daniel Shoptaw · Leave a Comment
The Cardinal contingent has left Indianapolis, headed back to theoretically warmer climes (St. Louis is supposed to be 41 today, Indy 34) and with a couple of new pitchers. However, there’s no thaw in the relations between them and Scott Boras in regard to the outfielder that is at the top of the list.

Decisions Made
December 2, 2009 by Daniel Shoptaw · Leave a Comment
The Cardinals announced yesterday evening that they had made their arbitration decisions. As expected by almost everyone, they tendered arbitration to Matt Holliday, Joel Pineiro and Mark DeRosa, while allowing Troy Glaus to leave without strings.
Arbitration Day For Cardinals

I hope everyone had a wonderful and safe holiday weekend. Now the calendar has turned, the weather has chilled, and the hot stove is starting to be warmed.
More Thoughts On The Cy Young

If you’ve not seen them, my selections for the Cardinal Bloggers Awards are below. Â The votes are coming in from across the blogosphere and we should have some results maybe this weekend.
Cy Not In The Cards

Not Sitting On The Dock Of The Bay
November 18, 2009 by Daniel Shoptaw · Leave a Comment
News continues to be a slow and very small trickle at this time of year, so I was a little surprised to see an interesting story on the Post-Dispatch website this morning. According to John Mozeliak, Jason Bay is not a priority.
Still Marking Time

The dead period continues, as a few rumors might trickle out during this period before the official start to free agency but not much else. Just a slow time for a baseball fan.
Cardinal Baseball Talk
November 12, 2009 by Daniel Shoptaw · Leave a Comment
We had a good conversation last night with Matthew Leach, Cardinal beat writer for MLB.com, on the United Cardinal Bloggers Radio Hour. The major topics were hashed out and Matthew brought some interesting thoughts into the mix.
The Beginning of Everything

The general managers get together starting today in Chicago. While this is a preview of the big “winter meetings” that will be held next month in Indianapolis, there’s not expected to be much of a ripple made in the offseason pond from this gathering. Joe Strauss sets the scene not only for these meetings, but […]
Twigs For the Stove
November 5, 2009 by Daniel Shoptaw · Leave a Comment
First off, congratulations to the Yankees. I’m not a Yankee hater, due to their tradition mainly. I’m not big on the fact that they spent so much and won, but when you look at how often they spent a ton and lost, you can see that’s not completely the reasoning.
Continuing Reaction
October 28, 2009 by Daniel Shoptaw · 1 Comment
The ripples from Monday’s press conference are still rolling around Cardinal Nation. Without Mark McGwire there to answer questions, the reverberations may continue for quite some time.
Big News On Many Fronts

For an offseason weekend with a team already out of the playoffs, there have been some seismic shakes going on in St. Louis.
News In a Newsless Void

As you know, there aren’t many things going on right now that are Cardinal related. Â So you have to pick out the small nuggets that are around and blow them up into talkable topics. Â Thankfully, I’m a blogger. Â That’s my job, that’s what I do.
Back In the Saddle

Been a while, hasn’t it? I’ve been out of the office, been busy with the Baseball Bloggers Alliance award work, and there’s not been just a ton of Cardinal news to talk about. There are a few stories today, though, that I thought I’d touch on.
Chopping Wood For the Hot Stove

It’s a cold, rainy morning here in Arkansas, which finely matches the mood of Cardinal Nation after the quick exit from the postseason.

A Wrap and a Look Forward
October 7, 2009 by Daniel Shoptaw · Leave a Comment
It’s been a busy week for me, with having to drive a hour and a half to an audit every morning. Â (Usual commute to the office–8 minutes.) Â So I’ve not had the chance to finish up the regular season and look at tonight’s start of the NLDS. Â Let me see if I can’t do that […]
Without Wain, It Pours

The disappointment last night was tangible in Cardinal Nation. Â If you weren’t at the ballpark, just looking through Twitter would have clued you in on that.
Continued Cause for Concern
October 1, 2009 by Daniel Shoptaw · Leave a Comment
OK, it’s not just the Cardinals. Â The Yankees lost last night to the Royals. Â The Dodgers just finished losing three of four to the Pirates and lost to the Padres last night. Â Playoff teams are losing to the bottom rung of teams.
Cardinals Stumble to Start Final Stretch
September 30, 2009 by Daniel Shoptaw · Leave a Comment
It’s meaningless baseball, right? Â The Cards are going to the playoffs, but without a lot of things going their way, there’s not much they can do otherwise. Â The odds are long that they’ll catch the Dodgers for the best record and, given the way that the Rockies have handled the team, being second might not […]
