Comments on The SABR Baseball List and Record Book, Part 1

January 18, 2009 by · 2 Comments

In 2007 I wrote several posts at my personal blog that were commentaries on the great book published that year from SABR, titled The SABR Baseball List and Record Book (see it at Amazon). As we are now in the lull awaiting spring training, I thought I’d republish these entries here at Seamheads, as I’d like to encourage […]

Quite a Find: A Piece of History

January 10, 2009 by · Leave a Comment

A lot of guys like me who grew up in the 1970s or 1980s have had daydreams along these lines. You’re at an estate sale, and you stumble upon a box of really old baseball cards in a corner marked “$10 for all”. Or you’re helping to cleanout your elderly neighbor’s attic and come upon a […]

Switch Hitters: Chipper’s Place and The Issue of Speed

January 1, 2009 by · 4 Comments

In early 2007 at my personal blog, Philosopher Stone, I blogged on the topic of all-time switch-hitters. Specifically, the blog posting’s focus was on Switch Hitters and Speed . Given the continued hitting excellence of Chipper Jones, I thought I’d update this posting and give my question about the connection between switch hitting and speed a […]

The 2008 edition (37th volume) of The Baseball Research Journal (available only to SABR members) had a couple of good articles on the baseball Triple Crowns, one by Bill Nowlin and one by John E. Daniels. The article by Nowlin, titled The OBP Triple Crown, discussed who the Triple Crown winners would have been had […]

November 23, 2008 by · Leave a Comment

This past spring I read The Stark Truth, by Jayson Stark, a columnist and frequent commentator on ESPN. Overall, I found the book a worthwhile read: I have one major criticism, but his topic is a lot of fun so I thought I’d share my reflections on his choices of the most overrated and underrated players […]

Comments on Newsday’s Top 100 Greats and Legends List

November 23, 2008 by · Leave a Comment

During the summer Newsday posted a piece titled: Newsday’s 100: The Super Elite Hall of Fame. The idea was to grant that the MLB Hall of Fame’s criteria for choosing players has not been consistent over the years (a case made by Bill James and many other writers before), so what would a list of only the truly cream of the crop look like? They decided to go for a list of just the very best 100 “greats and legends”, with another 18 players listed who are not eligible for the Hall of Fame (Pete Rose and Joe Jackson plus players who have retired recently or are still active). Since I love projects like this, I of course would like to comment on their selections.
