Upon doing some research, I stumbled upon an event that caught my interest. Columbia School of Social Work Criminal Justice Caucus and NYU Silver Undergraduate Student Government Association are hosting a “Second Chance Job Fair,” a job fair designed specifically for formerly incarcerated people. The event will be taking place at Grand Hall, NYU Global Center for Academic and Spiritual Life
238 Thompson St., 5th floor New York, NY 10012 from 10:00AM-3:00PM.
Here is a sample of the participating employers of this event:
Defy Ventures: Defy is an entrepreneurship, employment, and character development training program for currently and formerly incarcerated men, women, and youth.
Positions: Defy offers services including intensive personal and leadership development, competition-based entrepreneurship training, executive mentoring, financial investment, and business incubation.
Location: New York City
Project Renewal: Their mission is to end homeless in NYC helping persons find housing, health, and employment. They specialize in working with persons with barriers to employment such as incarceration histories, mental illnesses, etc.
Positions: They offer paid internships and employment services
Location: They serve all boroughs; their offices are located in the Bronx and Manhattan
Circles of Support/ JC Foundation: They provide services and resources to individuals coming home from NYS Prison to the community of Harlem. They work with the families of these individuals to strengthen and provide resources and support them which increases support for their newly released loved ones. They also provide a support group for women, who have incarcerated loved ones.
Positions: Not offering employment opportunities; but offers involvement in RMV training (15 positions) and Talk2Me Women’s group
Location: Manhattan
Hour Working Women Reentry Program: They are a multi-phased job training program geared specifically towards women in need of the individual educational and vocational support needed to enter the workforce.
Positions: 10 positions (Hour Children’s Thrift Sales Associate, HELP Daycare Personnel, Office/Clerical, Food Pantry Personnel Intern possibilities in all of the above in addition to the mentoring and after school programs
Location: Long Island City
