CONVERGE @ST. FRANCIS VISITS THE 9/11 CHURCHES
Saturday, May 18, 2024
1:15 PM – Meet outside Saint Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church and National Shrine at the World Trade Center, 130 Liberty Street, New York, NY 10006
Tour begins at 2:oo PM and will conclude at St. Peter’s around 3:45 PM. (times subject to slight change)
Join Converge@St. Francisfor a visit of the 9/11 churches:
- St. Paul’s Chapel at the World Trade Center
- St. Peter Church (The first Catholic parish in New York City)
- St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church
Each of the three churches we will visit has a unique story connected to the tragic attack on September 11, 2001. On this walking tour we will visit each of the three sites to learn more about the history building and it’s role in the 9/11 attack and its aftermath. St. Paul’s chapel was the site where the first U.S. President, George Washington, went to pray before being inaugurated. Despite it’s close proximity to the destroyed twin towers, this historic episcopal church miraculously survived the destruction that day. St. Peter’s church, is not only the oldest Roman Catholic parish in New York City, but it is the site where Fr. Mychal Judge’s body was brought after he lost his life ministering to the people at ground zero. And finally, St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox church, which is located at the World Trade Center, was the only church completely destroyed by the falling debris on 9/11. As a testimony to the resilience of their community and to our shared belief that God always triumphs over evil and darkness, the community completely rebuilt a new and magnificent church which stands tall over the 9/11 memorial.
Join us for this ecumenical tour of these three historic NYC Christian sites. All are welcome but space is limited. 40 people maximum.
Please note that this is a walking tour and may not have disability access.
FEE: $10
The fee will be used to make a donation from the Church of St. Francis of Assisi to each church visited.
