Ever since her Oscar win, fans of Kenyan beauty Lupita Nyong’o have been anxiously wondering what her next major film role might be. Last year, the star was confirmed for several projects including the latest installment of Star Wars franchise, and Americanah — an adaptation of the Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie novel of the same name.
But, it looks like her next major role will be in Indian-born filmmaker Mira Nair’s adaption of book The Queen of Katwe: A Story of Life, Chess, and One Extraordinary Girl’s Dream of Becoming a Grandmaster . The Queen of Katwe is the story of Ugandan chess prodigy Phiona Mutesi. Lupita Nyong’o will be playing Harriet Mutesi, Phiona’s mother.
The actress recently shared a snapshot on-set in Uganda with filmmaker Mira Nair. Nair, who is best known for The Namesake and Monsoon Wedding , among an impressive list of film credits and accolades, will be heading the film. The production is considered to be the second major film to come out of Uganda after the 2006 picture The Last King of Scotland , which starred Forest Whitaker as Idi Amin.
Selma star David Oyelowo will also be in the film alonside Nyong’o, earlier this year, it was reported that Nyong’o and Oyelowo will also be starring together in the film adaptation of Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie’s novel Americanah .
There is no word yet on which actress will be playing Phiona Mutesi, but the role will most likely be going to a local Ugandan talent. The film will also most likely see a 2016 release, depending on when it hits the festival circuit.
