Jo Jo Gunne Videos

Jay FergusonIt sounds as though Jo Jo Gunne rehearsed a lot before they put out their debut album on David Geffen's Asylum label. The arrangements are complex in a hard rocking motif. The piano, bass, and drums chant an incessant straight rhythm with some imaginative, syncopated guitar playing adding interest to the material.

The material itself, written principally by pianist Jay Ferguson (along with Mark Andes, former members of Spirit) is unfortunately unmemorable with lyrics more like modern day chants than songs. As with most hard rock, especially in this Southern California genre, the numbers are mostly a coherent set of riffs. The vocals feature some good harmonies, but no standout soloists.

The production is quite good with the voices and lyrics de-emphasized by a certain lack of clarity as opposed to a very clear instrumental sound.

- Bruce Samuels, Words & Music, 6/72.
