Really Rosie
Carole King

Ode 77027
Released: February 1975
Chart Peak: #20
Weeks Charted: 15

Carole KingSoundtrack to a children's show to air this Wednesday is not the next King LP per se, but a very pleasing interlude. Packed with excellent music to appeal to kids and adults, including songs explaining the alphabet, the months and how to count as well as some wonderful stories. LP on the whole is just plain fun and opens a brand new avenue for this already superbly talented lady. Any child tuning in this show will want the LP, as will the steady King fans, so you may expect bigger sales than usual here. Wonderful part of the album is that she talks to children, not down to them. Best cuts: "Really Rosie," "Such Sufferin'," "One Was Johnny," "Chicken Soup With Rice."

- Billboard, 1975.

Bonus Reviews!

I've been saying she needed a new lyricist, and here he is -- Maurice Sendak, a writer of children's books favored by adults, which makes him a rock (not rock and roll) natural. By side two you begin to resent the repetitiousness of some of King's devices, but since side one compresses her most exciting music since Tapestry you're already converted and it doesn't matter. B+

This winning soundtrack collaboration for a children's TV special (with children's author Maurice Sendak) was a return to form for King. Really Rosie contains some of King's best solo material. This is an enjoyable listening experience for children and adults alike. * * * *

- Rick Clark, The All-Music Guide to Rock, 1995.

Even three-year-olds get to feel the earth move under their feet with Carole King for the whole family. As much fun as it was 30 years ago, the brilliant songwriter's soundtrack to the Maurice Sendak TV special is deep, adorable and just plain perfect, in spite of the macabre content lifted from the author/illustrator's book. An alternative route for teaching the alphabet, it makes a clever gift for those endless preschool birthday parties. So "don't be Pierre, care!" * * * *
